CL55 Komp for me ??

I actually saw the car this morning, with the seller driving it, and so I suspected the sale hadn't gone through.

If I remember right the torque converter is covered by Tier 2.

He was on his way to MB of Wolverhampton to get the Gearbox sorted out.

My R129 had Tier 1 when I bought it in 2004. It was over 7 years old then, but of course the terms may have changed since.

The cover was astonishing ... arguably better than the new car warranty (it even covered punctures!). Only thing I needed under it was a new battery :)

I don't recall seeing an age limit on Approved Used, Tier 1, or Tier 2 MB warranty products - only the maximimum mileage at commencment of policy.

Yup I know the mileage limit for Tier 1 was 60k, I don't recall ever seeing an age restriction. Main dealers don't generally retail cars much over 7-ish years old anyway, so possibly no need for one.

I am still looking ! Obsidian or Almandine Black preferably Light interior not "Java" or Black CL55AMG from 2003 the face lift model.

Correct - I just checked my policy and there is nothing on there about age.

I will edit my earlier post.

Had a look last night on the internet and even just a black one is really hard to find.....good luck anyway will keep an eye out for you.

Well it's back on ebay. They fixed the gearbox quickly  :(

That's a concern if there's no mention of a fault in the ebay ad, and the seller now knows that it's there. Of course, it could have been fixed, but presumably he'd have given you first refusal had that been the case?

I said i didn't want to buy it Rob, to much hassle. Having to go back there with Olly to make sure everything was OK and as i mentioned the Java interior was not to our liking, to dark.

Now on AutoTrader for £ 19,000 !! the reserve on ebay last time was £ 20,000 then £ 19,500.

I read this thread with interest and I must admit frustration at the depreciation on my CL55 Kompressor :(

Maybe one day it will be a collectors item like my Cossie was? I hoped it would retain value when I bought it, at least better than a CL500.

I bought my Silver 2003 in 2006 for £39,000 with 40,000 miles FMBSH and a 1 year warranty from a non Merc but reputable prestige car dealer. It has every possible extra except distronic and a fridge and I have a bill of sale from the first owner that showed a total price of just under £128,000 including collection from the AMG factory.

I love the car and for me with a need for a proper back seat with legroom for 6' teenagers it is the perfect supercar. When Top Gear and 5th Gear rubbished the CLs I think they missed the point of them. The fact is it is very close to supercar performance with 4 proper seats and in total luxury. There has to be some trade off for the fact it is an S class size car but as I said for me it is perfection!

I think it is a league above the Quattroporte which to me is just another Fiat!!

I think only Bentleys or Astons have more presence and prestige. Astons have little rear space though and I haven't looked inside a Continental so can't comment on their practicality.

Another thing is I am disabled and need to get a wheelchair in the boot too. I'm not sure how many other supercars are so accomodating!

I have a niggling problem with an SRS sensor on the passenger seat which is as yet unfixed. Anyone know if this is a DIY job?

I had to have new front disks and pads for the MOT in November due to very bad corrosion on the back of the disks, apparently common on low mileage CL's? This was around £900 at Purslows prces but I got MB disks and pads fitted elsewhere for £460!!

Last B service I needed a propshaft coupling too and the bill was £800+.

I need new tyres now and the rims refinished which looks like it will set me back around £1375!! Any recommendations here? Are Michelin Sport Pilots the only way to go? What about recommendations for wheel refurbishers in North Hants?

I also have a problem with the battery going flat if I leave the car parked for more than a week. It didn't used to do it and the battery was 6 years old when replaced in January so I thought it would solve the problem but it did it again last week when the weather turned cold again. Anybody have any ideas what might cause this? No I don't leave anything on except the MB alarm / immobilser.

On the corrosion front I had both doors done under warranty. The bodyshop told me to look out for bubbling where the roof pillars join the rear wings. Apparently it is common on CLs and a very major job but should be covered under the corrosion warranty. I noticed the underside of the bootlid near the hinge is showing possible signs of corrosion too so will get that checked next service.

So all in all it is not a cheap car to run and isn't as reliable as the old Mercs were.

I'm sad about the depreciation but I have had 2.5 years of pleasure driving and owning it. It is truly wonderful and still makes me smile in awe everytime I press the loud pedal :)

Hello and welcome,

The seat pad issue is not really a DIY job unless you are competant with upolstry and removing the very heavy seat.

The battery drain can be checked. I suspect there is an electrical component staying "on" cauing a mild current drain. These drain faults on cars such as yours can take a long while to diagnose as the are electrically complicated.

Nice car BTW....

A realistic trade value for that CL55 is in the region of £16K.

Although £19K is probably a fair private sale price, there are so few buyers out there for this type of car right now, it will be difficult to move on for much more than the trade value.

So, I reckon this car dealer will happily let the CL55 go for £16k cash - once he accepts the reality of the market for these cars.

The Quattroporte is an odd car - the engine really needs to be worked but the noise and the styling are fantastic. Depreciation is in the same league as the CL.

Kwik-Fit are currently the cheapest for Pirelli P-Zero Rossos.

Oh dear.

The poor guy will probably spend all summer trying to get as inventive as possible selling the car, before finally facing up to the fact that these cars are going for up to £5K under trade because no-one wants them...

That said, with a warranty and a generous petrol and tyre allowance - I can't see why anybody would NOT want one...

Offer him £16K now, £15K in one month's time, £14K in two month's time and I bet he sells it to you in the next 3 months.
