CLK 208 Heater controls question?

I have seen some CLK 208 models pre 1999 with the round dials for air con heater etc. and some with the square / oblong type controls?
Was it a different option or just a backlog going through the facelift period?

I think Digital Climate Control was an option for certain models but standard on others (430, 55 AMG etc)
