Make sure you get the right comand unit part number with the mounting brackets..

Any one of A208 820 44 89, A208 820 40 89, A210 820 56 89 or A210 820 54 89. Dont settle for any other part number.

Take a look at my howto This will help with the wiring.

Take a look at my other howto for wiring up the cd changer.

Thanks to alfie.(COMAND IS SPOT ON)

After reading Alfies "How to" Write up (above). I now have a fully functioning spot on Comand Unit in my car,
points to look for, (in my experiance) on a clk w208. 2001

a: Main thing is speed Pulse.(the blue conector, black/green wire, way down deep in the passenger Sill (front end), it must be soldered,and well insulated.to ensure accuracy, and the blue connector is way down low in the sill.(takes a bit of carefull raking about to find it.)

b: C2 conector has to be really well seated..(I had to remove TERMINAL SET from cover, and just plug the inner terminal in.then my cluster came back to life) I bought a pre-wired loom,(FROM GERMANY).original merc c2 would proberly have fitted flush/all the way.(AND YES,,i did use the slider mechanism first time round)

c: Alfie is correct,,speed pulse must go to a1 and c2(6) to be really accurate. and the speed pulse is black/green on w208 2001, I ran to c2(6) only first,and it was hit and miss..with a1 and c2(6)..its now spot on on the navigation/streets etc.(also solder bridge from a(1) to c2(6)

My main problems where as above(apart from first comand unit had a dodgy cd reader, which vendor swoped with zero hassle.)

Its been a very Rewarding thing to do,(proberly now fluent in german after translating all the german websites for various bits n bobs)

anyway..i could not have done it with out Alfies Write up.
as a footnote..the cd/radio sound is now far superior to the old audio 10.

MY01 UPGRADE IS HIGHLY RECOMENDED,

My first post on this Forum and it's to say Hi and thanks at the same time.

So, Hi to all from James in Portugal and a BIG thanks to Alfie and axesrus, plus others, for their input and experiences on this subject. I'm about to go down this path and the advice given out here has been pretty handy to say the least.

Well I took the plunge, armed with information from previous posters above, and it was as close to plug and play as you can get.
Pulling the instrument pod above the steering wheel was completed using a set of pullers made for the job. Tucked the GPS antenna under the plastic part of the dash with padding holding it in place.

Very pleased.

soon these commands will be the subject of taking your eyes off the road brigade.
they are way too far down.

Thanks to Alfie, Axesrus and Jamesmc

Good morning,

At the weekend, I retrofitted COMAND (A208 820 40 89) to my MY2000 W208 CLK. Would not have had a hope without Alfie's excellent Howto (Thanks Alfie) and useful comments from others. Now working:

* Radio
* Boot-mounted CD changer
* Previously retrofitted UHI phone kit
* Navi working 95%

I had to run in a cable for the speed pulse from the passenger side footwell, but the connections are really temporary until I can get the proper parts. The navi works (sees 3 - 7 sats) and the map position moves, but it lags slightly, hence I suspect the quality of my speed pulse connections. Am I on the right track?

I have the following questions:

1. Does anyone have the part number for the female "pin" that goes into the A connector at A1 (for the bridge to the C connector)? I can see the parts Alfie bought (from the Howto) but don't know which part is the right one.
2. Should this pin be crimped, soldered or both?
3. What is the name for the little rubber covered bullet type connectors in Alfie's writeup (pardon my ignorance)? Are these recommended or is there a better method?

Thanks in advance for all help.

Michael

Well done. I dont have those part numbers myself. I have a few of the connectors but heaven knows what the part number is.

The speed pulse only needs to go to pin6 of the C2 connector. Dont worry about the bridge. We installed Comand into another W208 last week and only connected up pin6/C2.

If the position is updated fairly quickly and only lags a very small amount, then I would make sure your speed pulse has a good connection. If you had no speed pulse, then it would lag a long way and appear to suddenly jump as it corrects. Remember to calibrate the navigation for your tyres aswell.

I only used those connectors in case I wanted to return to Audio 10 in the future. If you dont intend to do that, then simply solder the respective connections. I always solder any connection. remember to insulate with insulation tape and then cover with some felt tape too.

All you need to do now is to have the cluster enabled;)

EDIT: looking below, James seems to have had a better speed pulse if he did the bridge. Try it with proper soldered connections and calibration first. If its still out, then make the bridge and see what happens.

Alfie, thanks for your very prompt response.

The bridge is already in place, just not permanently. I intend to make the correct connection to the A connector when I can identify the female pin. Anyone else know the part number?

I am due a service shortly and intend to get cluster coded then, although I'm not very confident that the dealer will know what to do. I had to supply the instructions when they coded the cluster for the UHI phone retrofit!

Any thoughts re the bullet type connectors?

Thanks again. Help much appreciated.

Michael
