My 2002 CLK 320 Petrol (W209) is coming up for its B Service in the next 30 days. I've just been quoted £1344 by Mercedes.

The car has only covered 35,000 miles, but due to its age certain parts need replacing every four years, e.g:(including labour)
- Air Cleaner - £75.50
- Fuel Filter - £124.20
- Brake Fluid - £62.30
- Spark Plugs - £288
- Auto Trans Fluid - £241.80
- B Service - £328.89

Now I understand most of these parts would need replacing, and i'm happy for them to be, but the price for such work seems rather steep, or is it just me?

I'm in two minds whether to keep it with Mercedes servicing as its full MBFSH at current, but am temped by an indy. Is it possible to get the b-service done by merc and the other parts but another specialist garage?

Any advice or thoughts on the price or where else to go would be great.

(I'm based in Henley On Thames, Oxfordshire)

Thanks.

I'd get it all done at an Indy ....

Its well out of warranty , and should you come to sell it , FMBSH isn't going up the price at this age of car.

Interesting that the dealers are advising you to change the ATF , they never used to do that ...

Olly changes the ATF ( and does a proper job ) for around £165.

I had my Auto Trans Fluid changed today for £135 from MB Tech in Warrington.
My Dad enquired about having his Brake Fluid changed at a small garage that does his MOT's and they said they charge £30 for Brake Fluid.
That gives you some idea of the savings to be made.

You could probably half the price of that lot using an indie.

Just doing it in my head it would cost around £550 + vat at our place but im sure you have many indies in your area.

As Howard & Jay have advised you could get that all done for a lot less at a good indi,as the car is out of warranty & around 9 years old i doubt whether it will affect the resale value when the time comes to change the car;)

So best bet sounds like an indy. I know of a few locals round here, anyone recommend an honest one with good service?

As suggested an Indy could reduce that cost by some margin, if there's a good one in your area.

Failing that even another MB dealer may be able to improve on those prices if you're prepared to make a few calls and haggle.

- Air Cleaner - £75.50
- Fuel Filter - £124.20
- Brake Fluid - £62.30
- B Service - £328.89

My C32 has fundamentally the same service requirements although some dealers try to charge a premium as it's got an AMG badge!?

For comparison, the last B-service was priced as follows, all done at an MB main dealer. They knock a further £100 off if I supply my own oil.

B-Service: £275 (vs £329)
Fuel & air filters: £125 (vs £200)
Brake fluid: £45 (vs £62)

So worth shopping around, whether it be main dealer or indy.

I had my CLK500 W209 B service done at merc dealership a couple of months ago at half the cost of that.

Mine also included spark plugs changed, aircon empty and regass, brake fluid etc.

Are you getting the servicing discount for older mercs?

I had transmission fluid changed at local indy (including new filter) for approx £130 IIRC

These prices are way over the top. For comparison I recently had a full service of all fluids (except coolant and aircon refrigerant) at my local indy plus ATF change (so every item on your list minus the spark plugs) for £325 + VAT. This included all MB OEM parts and Mobil 1 0W30 Fully synthetic oil as well as diagnostics.

I realise we have different cars so each of the items will differ slightly but as others have said, with a car of that age there isn't the value in going to the dealership that justifies the increase in maintenance costs.

What you were Originally Quoted:

- Air Cleaner - £75.50
- Fuel Filter - £124.20
- Brake Fluid - £62.30
- Spark Plugs - £288
- Auto Trans Fluid - £241.80
- B Service - £328.89

From the Part Numbers you have provided I get these Prices

(All + Vat)
Spark Plugs x12 - A0041595003 -
Retail: £96.00
My Price: £72.00

Fuel Filter - A0024773001
Retail: £73.00
My Price: £51.10

Air Cleaner Element - A1120940604
Retail: £74.20
My Price: £51.94

Auto Trans Fluid - A00198968 03
Retail: £10.80 per Litre
My Price:8.87 per Litre

Brake Fluid
Retail: £11.10Litre
My Price: £7.77 Litre

For some reason your retail prices on some items seem quite high.
