1987 Audi coupe quattro
Hi all.. very long time no post from me. in fact I just tried to register then realized I was already a member! lol :D

Been looking at getting a CLK coupe. they are very cheap now and very pleasing to the mark one eye ball & I was wondering what anyone can tell me about there engines?

Firstly is the 2.3-Kompressor 4pot the biggest engine with a manual gear box?

I'd like one with a powerful engine but not a big fan of auto boxes, & I take it 'tiptronic' means it is Auto with paddle shifts? :dk:

is this a reliable transmission? I've heard bad/expensive story's regarding audis & BMW's with such systems, is the CLK prone to failure/gremlins also?

Would it be possible to fit a manual box to a V8 if the auto-box went kaput for example?

Also, something else got my attention, I noticed that the CLK came with a 5 Cylinder diesel.. Owning an 5 pot audi , such engines are very close to my heart. :thumb: is this engine in any way related to VAG ? or is it a totally independent MBenz design?

I was kind of toying with the idea that if the engine mounts and bell housing matched up I could drop in an audi 300bhp 20ValveTurbo 5 pot, I just so happen to have hanging around

Sacrilegious maybe yes, but an interesting talking point at shows etc, none the less.

Any feedback is better than no feedback, so i'd like to hear what you guys think. :)

cheers, and thanks in advance.

Hi Gaz

Merc auto boxes are fine. They are not automated manual boxes (in most cases) and really work well. Tipronic means you can change gears manually also (via stick or paddles). All the stories you have heard about BMW SSG and SMG boxes do ot apply here.

I am sure others can tell you about the engine options.

Pete

..not heard a CLK with 5 cyl diesel ...:D

Oh.. ?
So Mbenz don't do a 5cyl td?

It was just something I read on a website listing cars and engine options?

I think it said it had 170bhp... :dk:

Which shape CLK are you talking about? Earlier W208 (like mine) built '97 to '02? If so, they didn't come with a diesel at all. 4 pot, V6, V8 petrols only, and only 4-pots had the manual option. The tiptronic autoboxes are fine, no paddles though, just via the gear lever.

Yes you did,the CLK270 but that`s a W209
don't suppose anyone has a picture of that engine and its mounting & bell housing locations? :)

What size engine is it? Has MBenz concidered turning it in to a fire breathing petrol unit? :D

Hi. Welcome to the forum.

I have a 2000 clk230 Kompressor (W208). It's a 2.3l Supercharged cruiser which does it's job admirably. I really enjoy it. I now want the clk320 K.

If you'd like to ask me any questions about owning one, please feel free and i'll do my best to answer them but I won't be able to answer question about the engine.

Hope this helps.

Hi-Ho.

AMG actually supplied a C class Coupe with a hot version of the 5 cylinder engine-- they called it the C30. Don't think the 5 cylinder diesel version of the C class coupe was ever sold in the UK unfortunately so no rhd versions. :( The only 5 cylinder diesel coupe in the UK was the CLK 270 W209 as said already.

PS what is it with VAG and 5 pots they also produced a V5 engine [ really a staggered straight 5] which made its way into the hot versions of the Golf and Jetta as I recall

Volkswagen introduced the first V5 engine, though this engine is not a true twin-bank V engine, but rather a VR5, or staggered bank straight-5 engine, and therefore not a true V5. It does not have one cylinder bank with 2 cylinders and one with 3; rather, it has all 5 cylinders sharing a single bank. The engine is derived from the VR6, and is thus a staggered 5, and has much in common with Volkswagen's earlier straight 5 developed in the 1980s for the Passat and Audi Quattro.

Volkswagen's VR5 is a 2.3 litre gasoline engine descending directly from the older VR6 from which VW removed a cylinder creating the first block to use five cylinders in a V design. The first version, with 2.3 L capacity, was capable of 150 PS (148 hp/110 kW) and had a maximum torque of 209 N·m (154 ft·lbf). It was introduced in the Passat in 1997, and later in the Golf, Bora (aka Jetta) and the Spanish Seat Toledo (Typ 1M) in 1999. In 2000 the head was updated with twin cams, and was equipped with 20 variable timed valves thus raising power to 170 bhp (127 kW; 172 PS).

I am unaware of any petrol 5 cylinder Mercedes car engines but who knows.:dk:

I guess it depends on what you really want. You appear to be comparing apples and pears at the moment (if you don't mind me saying so). Your interest in the 270 appears to be because it is a 5 cylinder engine. Not a bad choice though.

The 200 and 230 kompressor engines are quite different. The 270 cdi as mentioned above is a 5 cylinder diesel engine and only available in the W209 shape. It is a very good balance between power and economy IMHO. I used to own one and have attached a picture of the engine. I don't know if this will tell you the information you are after though.

The diesel engines were in production from 2002 until 2005 when it was replaced by a more powerful 320 cdi V6...a real powerhouse.

You are right that prices for the W208 CLK are now quite low making them quite affordable. The engines range from a 2.0 2.3 kompressor, 2.6, 3.2, 4.3, 5.0 and 5.5.

It is always exciting hunting for a prospective Mercedes so good luck.

Though both of German extraction, as far as I'm aware there is no relation between the Mercedes 5 pot diesel and VAG engines.

Oh yeah?!?! I have a red cover on the top of my engine wot says in large block capitals 'KOMPRESSOR' !!

Only buy things which have large writing in red on them because it means they're more dangerous.

MBenz used to build strait 6 engines? didn't they? Are there any good potential options for engine swaps there?

Also, do MBenz engines use CAM belts? or chains? And can they be replaced by my local garage? or even DIY?

Yes they used to do the straight six but that was before 97 i think. All mercedes engines use chains, and they hardly need replacing

You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example her

excellent ! :)
Well that's good news, it means no expensive belt changes.
If I had my way, ALL engines would use chains. Especially FWD V6 cars where there's little room and it usually cost a small fortune to replace the dam things. :(

Its such a shame that the often scary Costs of a Cam belt change has put me off buying a lot of used modern cars. In some cases the cost of the Cam belt change is more than the car is worth! :(

What ever happened to the good old days of DIY? The belt change on my 5pot audi is just the cost of the belt and water pump. And its a cheap, simple DIY job. :)

I swear these days, manufactures use over inflated cam belt charges to make money on otherwise reliable engines. :(
