CLK Owners Beware!

I'll be checking for threads along the lines of:

My battery is frozen

How do I get my doors to close now that I have forced them open

Must admit I've never had this problem YET.
Having said that I can understand it could happen.

Alex.

The same way it can happen to any car door, they all shut against rubber seals, not sure why CLK's are being singled out here?

I think compared to doors with frames (they have the felt like material in the channel) Whereas the clk glass sits snug on the rubber seal and water cab freeze between the two :dk:

Never had this problem with my Saab, despite some cold weather last winter. But, just in case, would a little spray of WD40 do the job?

Yes, just the same as water freezes between the rubber seal & door frame of ordinary car doors. Still can't see why CLK's are being singled out? If its cold enough to stop CLK's doors opening, then it is cold enough to stop any car doors opening, so the advice should be for all cars, not just CLK's.

You are correct but frozen windows on a CLK will stop you opening the doors coz there's no frame. It used to happen on my old 350z, silicon stops it.

Not necessarily, my windows have frozen & would not go up & down, but it has not stopped the door opening or closing. Only the rubber seal freezing will do that & that will apply to any car door not just CLK's. Just because the CLK has frameless windows does not mean it freezes easier than other cars, that's why the silicon advice should be for all cars and not just CLK's.

Some cars are worse than others. 10 year old MR2's have particular problems (again, a frameless door).
My theory is that the door->body seal is less than perfect in many cases, but the frameless design makes it easier for water to be drawn into the gap, then freeze.
Framed doors generally have the rubber seal arrangement less exposed to the elements.
I shall be out with the silicone spray myself.

I think you have the answer, the door must be misaligned or the rubber perished allowing water to get between the seal & the glass if the door gets frozen shut easily.

My own CLK has sat outside every winter since I got it and the doors have been frozen shut only twice in all that time, but so were the doors on the other cars in the driveway and none of them have frameless windows. So in my experience the CLK is no worse than any other car in that respect.

(currently -2C up here, the car is covered in ice already, forecast for during the night is -5C, I know the doors will open in the morning though.)

My Focus freezes worse than my Clk and that was after the Clk had been washed.

I have the perfect solution-Stay at home and don't go to work until the frost/ice thaws-Simples!!

Nice thoughts Gents,

-3C here this morning when I went out and had to use some serious defrosting to get into the sucker!

Thats after using silicon fluid to stop the seals freezing.... gonna really slather it on next time :D

I will be checking out rightmove later for properties in Bonnie Scotland! :D

I shall be saying "ellooooo, I'm your new neighbour....."

As an aside, the silicon fluid has made the action of the rear window smoother :-)

Righty,

It's clear that I did not use enough Silicon fluid

I don't have a spray, but if I did... I would spray it liberally into the roof channel from front to back, ensuring no drips as it is really slippery

Now, what I shall do next is to apply fluid (on a cloth or brush) to the lower windscreen seals (particularly the rear windows) in order that the frost doesn't prevent them from dropping when opening the door.

If that doesn't work I shall have to buy a cap for the car as I am not prepared to wreck the rear window mechanism in abortive attempts to make it function when iced up

chefy

Newbie here,(lurking for over a year 1) interesting post here about CLK doors / windows freezing, I shall look into getting some of that Halfords stuff, even although I am in deepest, darkest, coldest & meanest Scotland !!! (according to some of you guys ) thats going to cost me a fortune then - ayee ! petrol to get there,(and home again) and cost of the product ! Mmmm !
As I am new to posting here, I'll not say to much regarding your slating of us north of the border, in gods country - baron_ etc ! Anyway like some of you peeps, I had my no probs with my CLK last winter, but never the less I can see what may / could happen, and as they say prevention is better than cure - right.
