CLS problem

One came towards me on my walk to work and as it drove past they are very very sleek.

I am biased, but the original CLS's design is aging remarkably well.

It has not dated, it does not shout look at me too much, and its style will last.

There really is no car on the road with its lines, stance and design.

One thing about modern turbocharged diesels is it seems all too easy to " chip em to death " with cheapo tuning boxes. Remove the box before trading in/servicing and I doubt if it would be possible to easily detect a previous life of overboost/overfuelling---- which might manifest itself as an engine with premature bearing failure down the line? :dk:

EGR is the other problem and the related kit thereof.

Crockers had the bearing problem and that car is mapped. If wobblys is the same then perhaps v6 Cdi can't handle more power

Very sorry that this has taken the shine off of your CLS, give it another chance, give it a stern talking to and lay down the law, a little like getting a new puppy, and I'm sure it'll all be fine!

Well, funnily enough it seems the talking to might have helped as the noise hasn't returned! I've driven it pretty much every day since and even let it idle for almost an hour in the drive the other day - no noise....weird! I'm stuffed if the dealer can't hear it on monday!!

Ooo, I meant actually have it repaired and then talk to it!

If there was a noise it will always come back, gone are the days when I hope in vain that the expensive sounding problem has "gone away"

Maybe it wasn't the main bearing at all and an ancillary bearing causing the noise and being amplified by the block.
Listening to the complete isn't always a reliable method of diagnosis, you need to listen using an engine stethoscope.

It sounds like you have had a really unlucky time there OP. What does the fault sound like? Hopefully by 2008 by car had a better bearing!!

We'll see what the dealer says when they do a diagnostic on monday. But, if it fails to make the noise, I'm certain they'll just give me back the car...

Maybe the best kind these days with the cost of repairs so high...

Time to take stock I reckon. All I need is a safe, reasonably stylish, reliable means of transport that won't cost the earth to maintain.....

You need a Lexus (apart from the stylish bit)

But the one I linked to is the world's fastest hybrid and has all the gadgets you could ever want!

Shhhh... doesn't look as good as a CLS though... :)

Oooops!! That doesn't bode well for it...

Can you believe, on the day I find I have to postpone the appointment with MB Oxford (to hopefully later in the week) the damn noise returns!! :( Amazing isn't it!

Still, at least now they'll be able to hear it when it goes in!

we sell lots of V6 CDI's and get a lot in for service and have never seen this issue? Only vaguely remember reading of an issue on here but i certainly wouldnt say its common.
I think the V6 engines and the 7 speed boxes are absolutely fantastic.

I'm with Jay on this.
Really sorry to hear of your CLS issues, but I'm coming up to about 200K miles powered by varoius V6 cdi Mercedes engines now with no drama at all:o

Maybe my car was abused by it's previous owner. Always the risk with used cars... sigh...
