CLS320 cdi Buying advise, known issues, tips etc

535d lci m sport here i comeeeeeeeeeee :ban: LOL

In the LCI cars are all the known bugs ironed out. Someone I know has a 545i and its a bit too barge like. I'd probably go with a E90 if I was BMW hunting, and a nice BMW is something to consider.

I've done 38k miles and between me and the warranty co, engine faults add up to £2000.00. 10k miles isn't an awful lot, admittably many 100's of times more miles than Barry did in his CLS before it packed in.

My cars older than yours, but it's got less miles on it than either of yours. I'd like to see how you get on with this car, you may be fine, you may not be, but there are too many of us on here that do have V6CDi issues that were members before getting these cars, so I'd day the odds aren't in your favour.

Why not start a thread to see how many people on here have these 'issues'?

And if there are people out there googling away looking for a fix, it'll probably show up in their search as well.

How many of these engines have been made since 2005? Hundreds of thousands, if not millions? Yet because a handful of active posters on this forum have had similar problems the odds aren't in my favour? As a betting man, I'd say I'm odds on to not have any of these 'problems'.....

What I can't get my head around is why you still own your car? It's falling to bits, the gearbox is crap etc etc if I was you I'd have got rid sharpish if it had annoyed me as much as yours clearly irritates you.

Hi Steve,

I have research the LCI cars really well and i can honestly say they are fantastically bullet proof. however it has to be an lci otherwise would be similar to an a8 or cls in terms of issues.

previous generations of e60's had turbo issues failing prematurely, harder ride etc however i have to say bmw worked their back side off and people say the lci models are fantastic, usually when i purchase a car i always make a note of purchasing the facelift models of cars because these mostly have issues ironed out and are very sturdy cars. i have had my e90 from new and the thing has been fantastic, i really wanted a merc or an audi a8 however i have to be honest i dont like the idea of taking a risk and forking out so much money or a potential fault.

It has to be a concern if a cls is driven into a garage and within 3 seconds of an engine being on that a mechanic can say "bottem end" and it costs you 2.5k. just a joke really.

also i might have taken the risk of the external warranty for a cls was cheaper however at 1k a year is a joke from warranty direct ( I have heard excellent reviews about these guys) however for a 5 series (any engine diesel) its only 500 a year and thats at dealer repair. that has to mean something? cheaper parts ? less problems ? etc

Lee, I do hope for your sake I am wrong and you are right. The only reason I still have the car, is I cannot really afford to get another car as yet but as soon as I've got enough saved, its gone. It won't be a 7 speed and it won't be a V6CDi.

In the mean time why don't you get shot & get something more reliable for the same money Steve?

Good luck with whatever car you get next Steve, I do mean that, although if you look hard enough at any car you can find fault.

I seem to be more pragmatic about owning a car; there are thousands of parts that *could* fail and it happens now and again, I don't want to spend my life worrying if this that and the other is going to break, life's too short.

Steve if its not too much trouble for you, is there anyway for you to put up a poll as a sticky to see how many people have had the bearing issue and also how many have had the transmission valve body issue or even if you could show me how to do it, being new i am not 200% sure.

it would be great for currenty owners and potentional new owners.

I do agree with Sweetpea, *** your car has good value in it? assuming there no lonas etc on it,

You could swap for a lot of other stuff. At the same price or less.

I am supprised to be honest the trouble you have had, the gearbox you don't like etc etc that it's not gone already.

The roads you have near you and I gather your single (no kids) I would be looking at some fun motoring. For me a convertible, Z4, Boxster, even an SLK... or something similar.

I'm thinking along the lines of a 530i, auto, 2007, for roughly the value of the CLS (plus a bit maybe) and then have some (hopefully) trouble free motoring for a while...

What I've been reading in various places about the MB V6 cdi engine's lack of reliability has really put me off now.

yeah bpsorrel I have to agree, I have been on your other thread regarding your cls troubles and for mercedes to issue a bulitin regarding the issue, describing the problem etc etc is a major worry and if I had some faith in the after sales of mercedes I would have still purchased a cls and when it went faulty i would go to merc and ask them to fix it and they would free of charge because there is no way in hell i would expect even a 1.9 tdi skoda of have such an issue, never mind a merc cls and if it did have the issue i dont trust merc to make it hassle free to fix to its a big shame but ill be looking at a bmw or if i can find a decent cls500 i might see how i feel.

thanks :)

and thanks to everyone else, I have gained a lot more knowledge and maybe if i hadnt came here i might have got into a lot of trouble. i could pay a 2.5k bill but i dont feel i should have to, id rather send my parents on a luxury holiday or donate it to charity instead of fixing a car...

merc know about it and should be looking at the issue each time a v6 comes in and repairing it if they think there is an issue but we all know they wont so i wont take the risk either.

thanks again, I hope bpsorrel and *** have more luck with their cars,

ps I will be keeping an eye out for a cls500

I've been looking at the cls v6 cdi on auto trader today, was thinking of posting a similar thread. Found a facelift 09 plate , black, maple eye wood, cream leather, 37 k , command, heated seats. Full mbsh and I guess must have some mb warranty left £17995. private sale. what do u think of price?

bearing prob doesn't put me off but maybe it should?

my c320 is rusting but mechanically sound (ish) and have known it since new , I don't want to regret getting rid or her for a money pit . Not sure what to do

As far as I've heard, the bearing problem isn't an issue with the newer V6s, so '09 should be fine.
