CLS320 cdi Buying advise, known issues, tips etc

i think it might be an idea if the guys at PCS and the merc specialists at glasgow ibrox could confirm how often they have seen this issue, if it happens quite often then in sorry its a no no from me however if its a one off here and there thing then i might take a chance as then its just your pot luck

are running this theory on that if the engine has been thrashed everywhere that this is the likely cause of the issue ...

If there was Armageddon and the World stopped rotating, the authorities would ask all drivers of e330TD to face the same way and rev hard to restart the World...

LOL are they that bullet proof ???

I'll let you know what MB Oxford say when it's been in for a diagnosis later this week/

But I'm now seriously thinking of getting it fixed (under warranty) and passing it on to someone else to have sleepless nights over...because if it has been thrashed and there are other signs of that now if you look closely, it'll be a money pit for sure and I can't afford that.

yeah if you could do that, that would be brilliant atleast it would give us an idea how big the issue is relative to the number of units out there and across if its across the range regardless of class.

cheers

you guys are not helping lol :(

I am trying to convince myself to buy a merc.. but this bearing issue is just silly and just putting me off buying one.

or a get an e300td which apparently would still work even if the world fell apart lol

Like I said earlier I've owned two V6 320 CDi's, one with 135k and my current 2007 W211 E320 CDi Sport has 102k and neither has cost me a penny other than usual service costs.

As good as motoring forums can be in gaining information, by their nature they also attract people with problems and this has to be taken into consideration.

If you lived your life by these people you'd end up becoming a hermit, so you buy which car you've got your heart set on and just enjoy it.

Life's too short to whittle about engine bearings etc etc.....

Agreed Sweetpea, but, if I'd read about this problem before buying mine, I would have known what to look out for at least and taken a much, much closer look at this car and probably not bought it. It's clearly been spanked to death by someone and had I known that V6 CDIs can't handle that, I'd have looked elsewhere! Will probably try a petrol Beemer next...

i guess thats part of the trouble with these type of cars, its very very hard to see if a car has been thrashed around. I wont lie, I would struggle to go view a car and tell it was thrashed unless it was stating the obvious such as screwed tyres, rough idle, notchy gearbox etc etc

unless its had a remap? at somepoint ? and a rubbish one at that or a stupid tunning box. I dont agree with such items because there is no proof it doesnt harm the engine and i just couldnt/wouldnt want to take the risk i damaged the engine and passed it on to someone else.

I can't see a main bearing issue being attributed to being driven hard.

There are very few 'new generation' cars out there that can 'take a spanking'.

So far how many people have had this problem?

You, ***, Crockers, Wobbly and who else?

What do you think causes it then? Faulty parts? Is that why MB pay for it, even out of warranty?

If so, why don't all the V6 CDIs suffer from it? Or is really just pot luck?

I think this thread needs merging with my CLS problem one! :D:D

But you've never had them for long enough or done enough miles in either car for the issues to show....

do we not have any forum member that have a merc secialist garage that would come across this issue day in day out in there every day work who would tell us how common/rare it is ?

Well, Olly from PCS new it well and recognised the noise immediately...

I've done roughly 10k between both cars.

How many miles do you think counts?

I've done 38k miles and between me and the warranty co, engine faults add up to £2000.00. 10k miles isn't an awful lot, admittably many 100's of times more miles than Barry did in his CLS before it packed in.

My cars older than yours, but it's got less miles on it than either of yours. I'd like to see how you get on with this car, you may be fine, you may not be, but there are too many of us on here that do have V6CDi issues that were members before getting these cars, so I'd day the odds aren't in your favour.
