Hi
I'm thinking of retrofitting a Comand 2.0 to my W163 ML.
I've not seen a Comand in action, so the best I could do was to read a downloaded manual.
Does this Comand do 3D map view?
In any case does the low-down screen position mean that in practice only the voice comands are useable?
Is the volume okay with an iPod 4G on the aux input?
Thanks
Michael

I don't think Comand 2.0 has 3D capability.

Comand 2 does not offer 3D view. The position of the unit is where the existing audio10 and storage tray beneath, are presently located. Its easy to see whilst driving.

Volume of the AUX input is low so you will need to turn it up if using it with an ipod or other MP3 player.

I retrofitted comand to my W208 and my W209 has it as New with an Ipod Aux so I am used to the best of Comand 2.0

Comand is great but not so good in a W163 with no steering wheel control. I was looking on E-bay for a Comand but the 163 units are rare. However came accross a cheap and cheerful 7inch touch screen unit which makes up for the no steering wheel controls. (Also has a Remote) This unit actually has great sat nav with Nav N Go iGo 8 which is 3D. It has bluetooth for phone, DVD, Ipod, Mp3, Rear camera input and even Digital TV. DVD and TV is wired through the handbrake so screen blanks out when moving. You can feed rear screens as well. It comes with all sorts of cables and apart from connecting the handbrake cable and lighting cable, a DIN to ISO adapter for the radio aerial it is plug and play using the existing W163 ISO just leave plug c and the D2 plug off. I bought a 2Din cage to hold it securely.

It does have steering wheel inputs but not sure if it would work with Merc systems.

The sat nav aerial is under the dash and it has an ipod plug which I routed to the glove box. The TV aerial has a magnetic base and I put it in the glove box for putting on the roof should TV be required. However the TV works great with the aerial in the glovebox.

I tried wiring the sat nav to the w163 wiclic connector but no signal.

As I said this unit was very cheap compared to Comand and branded items and thought it would not be very good. So far 3-weeks it has been fantastic.

I have lost my CD player but this unit will copy the CD tracks onto the second SD card and the Front USB will allow lots of Mp3 so will not miss it.

It will even play MPS via bluetooth from the phone.

The Ipod is not too bad but have to unplug the ipod / switch off as it dosn't charge with the Ing key removed.

Not Comand but the Nav N Go iGo is a great Nav tool.

For looks it is just a big screen and looks OK.

Thanks for your replies

So on one hand Comand looks classy and part of the car, but is expensive (if you can find one), and the satnav is not the best.

On the other hand, the 7" units offer endless functions and are affordable, but are more prone to component failure and firmware corruption.

I might just stick with my excellent Navigon satnav, and for the iPod, buy a wired FM modulator to fit in the aerial lead to the Audio 10.

A unit that works between 87.7 and 88.0MHz, frequencies used by low-powered hospital radios mostly in Scotland, might offer the least interference.

See this for UK FM frequencies and stations:
