COMAND woe with CLK 320CDI

I tried a VER 5 disk (For W211) today and it matched the TOM TOM almost exactly. The "turn left" instruction now occurs when you are on the roundabout (still too late in my view) but certainly better than 20m after the manouvre.

Car is booked in first thing tomorrow - I will asking for a VER 5 disk under warrenty.

TMC also worked - no apparent problems but only tested over a 12 mile journey.

Command wont read CDs - any tips?

Bought a 2001 CLK 320 4 days ago, Command wont read CD's, MB want about £3k to fit a new one - Does anyone have any advice?!

Company in Germany claim to refurb unit for 90euros but will still cost £650 to get it fitted & calibrated(?).

Saw a DIY Command fitting CD on EBAY - is it easy?

Hope someone can help!! Lovely car, just want it perfect but not at MB prices!!!!

Thanks,

Chris

COMAND on the old shape CLK is easy to remove from the car, you go to your dealer and buy the removal tools and stick them in the little slots on each side. Or just ask the dealer to do it. - the plugs then just unclip on the back - be careful with the one with orange leads - they are glass fibre and get damaged if you bend them too much.

However, before you attempt to remove it to have it repaired, and re-install it, go get a CD/DVD cleaning disk (Scotch make them) - it has little cleaning brushes on that will clean the laser.

If the dealer has quoted £650 - go somewhere else - re-coding a new unit takes about 10 mins with Star diagnosis, removing unit 5, putting it back even less.

There are lots of good suppliers of used COMAND units - As you are in the UK look at www.comand.co.uk - you get warrantied units there

Where are you ?

It was command.co.uk that quoted me £650!

Will try cleaning the unit first.

Can it be recoded whilst it's not in the car & then plugged & played?

Thank you for your advice btw richard.

Well, its coded already, so theres no reason that it needs to be re-coded after it is fixed (since its the CD mech at fault).
However, it really needs to be in the car to code it, as its done via the dealer's diagnostic computer.
And, in reality, it will work probably work without coding.

Dealers like to use the language of "coding" to make it look like they are actually doing something ...

I don't think they're coded at all, are they (I assume you mean in the sense that car radio's have security codes)? I'm terrrified of someone nicking mine - if they are coded, then I'll relax a little.

The coding the dealer is talking about is presumeably using Star Diagnose to confirm the presence of COMAND - you'd have to do this if you were retrofitting COMAND, but it's not an issue as you've already got it.

Had the COMAND unit replaced today and checked it out on the way home, works as per the sat nav did in the other one, fine :) .

Been back to the dealer with my VER 4.1 DISK in the car. The senior technician agrees that the instructions come late - after the manouvre on roundabouts. Dealer been has been in contact with MB warrenty department and they will only authorise a replacement VER4.1 disk.

I asked what would happen if the replacement 4.1 disk was the same as my original - answer "nothing". Since testing my car the dealer has tried a CLS vehicle that behaves similar to mine so they are now saying "they all do that sir"

So - the VER4.1 disk is superceded and retailed for significantly more that the VER 5 DISK (presumably both cost the same to produce) - MB are prepared to special order a new 4.1 disk under warrenty when they have VER 5 disk in stock.

Anyone else follow the logic here?? I sure don't!

Anyone else had a ver 5 disk under warrenty?
