Ok,

So i've heard a lot of talk about the this fantastic command systems...

Am i right to say they are the top of the field in this area? and they
have in-built GPS among things...

Are there any systems that i can build into my car with GPS that are not
going to cost me both arms and legs?

Thanks

You get what you pay for and if you simply want a navigation unit then is COMAND the item of choice?

I have both including the latest Kenwood system which offers similar features, it might be very, very slightly cheaper but not much. Tom Tom is a whole lot cheaper but you get what you pay for.

Your choice, your decision.

Regards
John

I am thinking of buying a tomtom and then and trying to integrate
it into into the car some way build it in somehow.....

I know, trust me i'd much rather command but when the price difference is 1000 i really can't justify it. almost the cost of the car :(

COMAND is a lot more than just sat nav. And even if you have all the separate systems that make up COMAND, such as sat nav, phone, audio system, tv, etc, as separate systems they do not equate to the total of COMAND.

The key word is "integrated": COMAND integrates all these functions and their management, dependencies, operational controls and presentations on the various displays into a single system deeply integrated with the rest of the car (including integration with linguatronic for example).

The speed sensitive volume control, auto mute of other sources when making/receiving calls or getting sat-nav directions, the ability to set individual volume levels for different sources and to specify volume differential for the sat nav directions over other audio sources, etc, etc, al make COMAND a truly integrated experience.

When I am driving with the sat nav on, I have the map on the big screen, and the direction symbols in the cluster display so that I don't need to take my eyes of the road. Similarly, when you're making a handsfree call, you get the visual feedback in the cluster - same for all the other systems. They can also all be operated through the same linguatronic interface. This working together of the cluster display, linguatronic and the main COMAND unit is the type of integrated experience you would not get with separate systems to the same extent.

And then there is the fact that COMAND is properly integrated into the console, not a series of add ons all looking, feeling, behaving differently, but stylistically part of the car.

IMHO my "older" COMAND generation to me works better in that respect compared to more recent versions. This is not just a matter of style though.

Things like portable sat navs are what makes thieves smash your window to nick them. With an integrated system such as COMAND in my car, that problem is a lot less (and you don't need the portable sat nav actually in your car to fall victim to that, the tell tale suction marks on the windscreen or dash are often enough).

Of course, each to their own, but to me COMAND is a lot more than a conglomerate of individual devices/services and I would not buy a Merc without it any more.

Totally agree and with an older car we are really talking about cosmetic value. Some folks enjoy adding expensive options to an older vehicle, others tend to look at their car as a means of transport. With an older vehicle that has very little resale value, then solely on costs.... Tom tom every time but make sure you NeVER leave the thing in your car when it is left unattended. :)

I have a Nokia N95 8gb with TomTom on it. Connected via bluetooth to a GPS receiver the size of a match box. Phone came as part of a contract and the software via a friend for nowt. thing is the dogs and even came with all his Points of Interest loaded - very good and cheap!

The direction arrows come up in the cluster!!!!

That cant be a function in my car right?

Thanks for the wright up though

much apprciated..

a TV in the car would be sweet!!!

Whilst I agree with ManInKen re integration & cluster display etc, there are aftermarket units which come close and additionally have extra features.
In particular, I would mention units such as Pioneer (http://www.carstereos4u.co.uk/doubl...b100ii-and-ktc-d500e-967593-322631-543661.php)

which have everything in them including satnav, stereo, dvd, reversing camera & tv ability, bluetooth, memory stick socket, touch screen, remote, voice command and as such everything will work in harmony similar to Comand. Steering wheel control can be maintained, but full cluster info is not available. These units certainly muddy the water in the oem/aftermarket debate and I am certainly tempted. Aftermarket units are more likely to be bang upto date than oem and are definitely better value when you consider their functions.....
This is my opinion & I know many will disagree & champion oem! :)

Comand wasnt an option in the W202 although that didnt stop Shude from installing it. As for directions in the cluster on a W202 - no chance.

You're better off getting a motorised tft monitor with TV, CD, DVD, Sat Nav etc. all in there. Mine also has some cool stuff, like an AV input for my PS2 and another for a video camera. Im sure command is awesome, but like you say its hard to justify on these ageing cars! :(

That's not to say i dont read Shude's command post every few months and get tempted! :D

Not unless you install a 208 cluster... :)

I must have been out of in-car systems a LONG time.
Can you get the screens that fold out from normal
"Head Units" and they can gave GPS on them???

If you have this can you tell me which one you have and
what you have to do to set it up for GPS.

Cause i am looking at spending $400AUD on a GPS...

This makes it interesting..
ANd the PS2 thing of course :)

Yes,

like other have read the famous post a few times...
very envious of a few of shudes MODS....

If i'm going all the way with a 202
i need to have a C43 first :)

PS2 is easy, it is just a case of pluggin the AV leads into the head unit.
Same for an MP4 player, digi box and dvd player. what is important is the head unit.
The problem I find with the flip out screens is that they look flimsy and out of place in a Merc(Or any car) I would recommend Command with the PS2 wired in through the av input, although this can only be done if you have the TV option on the command.
I have screens in my headrests in my S211 and also one on the tailgate for the rear facing child seats! I use the inputs on the TV for the MP4, Digi TV and PS2 and have put splitters on each screen so that everyone can watch something different.

The PS2 goes in the armrest hole(should have been black!)

Depends on how far you want to go.
I got my headrests from America as the cheapest I could find here for My car was £1200 whereas the ones I got were £500.
PS2 £25 Ebay
MP4 Player Archos AV604 Refurbished £80 Ebay
Merc Digi Tv From Richard

looks FANTASTIC very jealous. . ..

ok so it's back to a no on the flip out screens..

Back to an incar system....

do you have to run wires from your head unit to the PS2?
???

Yep, you'll need a volt converter too, so that the PS2 can be powered (probably best close to the battery in the boot, maybe spare wheel-well).

I wouldnt say a no to flip out TV's just because someone else doesnt like them! after all, you're looking for a cheap(er) command replacement, so some compromise is to be expected. Permanent screens do look better, but they're quite a tall order in the 202, and as they're not standard would look as out of place as a flip-out!

They're great if theft is a problem too, as mine auto folds when you turn off the ignition so it looks like a normal head unit :)

I'm with you there mate

Still, if you could just buy it and have it fitted all in one day would modding be as much fun?

It's all about the project!
