Command update disc

Hi John,

No I haven't tried it in another W211 - I don't have access to another one with COMAND. We have tried all possibilities of burning the CD/DVD's. For what it's worth, we've successfully managed (after some difficulty) managed to play MP3's in our BMW 550i.
I would seriously, seriously suggest you first the CD in another 211, how many people strip down a television without first checking the fuse? I'll pm you the reason ;)

Please feel free to send me a copy of the CD and I will cvheck it out on my car.

Regards
John

It is easier I find in talking versions. The update disc that we are talking about is a 'patch' that resolves a few modifications. It is not an official upgrade for the COMAND and it is certainly not a mapping update.

Hi John
Forgive me but I am losing the thread here. Are you saying that this "patch disc" will give eta on the front screen?
I have w211 2003 model COMAND with version 7.0 mapping disc. All works fine but will not display the ETA without pressing some buttons.
If this is the case, is it available from MB? I use MB Direct for servicing but they have never heard of this.
If not the case, will the latest firmware update CD part number w211 589 13 2200 do the business for me?
Alternatively, does anyone have a disc I could borrow to do the update please? All postage paid and a pint thrown in for good measure.
Thanks loads
Dom.

Yes he does.

The patch disk is the update disk.

Dan is spot on but this is more a question than statement.

Everything before this 'patch' disc has been an update to the COMAND and usually carried out whenever the vehicle is serviced by a main dealer. This patch for ETA falls outside that criteria and in my experience most dealers will not install it free of charge.

This is a question and not a statetment of fact, but I would be extremely surprised if this single patch disc would instruct the COMAND to play Mp3's if it never played hem before. 99% of 211 owners that have problems are possibly incorrectly writing their CD\DVD's.

Does the comand play DVD+RW? mine dont unless im using cheap disc's

I'm not sure I have any,but will give my son a call and se if he has one that I can try.

Is there a reason for using a more costly iption? I only ask because the ordinary DVD contains an awful lot of music and ours contains just about every song I would ever want to listen to  :)

I'll chase up my son.

Im complying a DVD music video and am using the RW as a tester

Would be best to refer to the same car but the W221 has worked fine with all DVD+RW disks I've tried. Which DVD media brand did you use? Try Verbatim if it does not work with others.

Why not make a DVD copy on a DVD+RW disc first to be sure you are only testing the media, not the disc compilation.

John's right here most problems with playing DVD's are not caused by the hardware.

The headunit is fussy but with a little practice it can be done.

To test if your headunit does have the software that supports MP3 burn some onto a CD.

My unit does not play DVD-RW as well as DVD+RW.
I tried different brand and I ended up using DVD-R or DVD+R using nero ISO format and closing the session.

Just been chatting with my son and he states that it will be a can of worms and IF a R|W disc works it will be more luck than judgement. I strongly recommend you start easy and work your way up. Write a CD\DVD, if it fails to work on your COMAND then before trying to fiddle with anything, cHECK THE CD WORKS on another vehicle's system. I cannot, cannot emphasis this enough. The effort will be worth it:)

I got the vehicle back last week but was unable to respond for a while.

As mentioned previously, the Engineering Menu showed that the software on our model was still dated 2003 - ie. no updates had been done at all even though the vehicle was only serviced the MB agents.

I requested that they please update the COMAND software when I took the vehicle in to replace the brakes pads. They did not know what I was talking about. I then showed them the what the latest version of the software available was by giving them the part number of the disc (I found that in this thread - thank you.)

After a bit of resistance, they agreed to contact Mercedes-Benz themselves - what do you know? There is an update:mad:

They downloaded the update, created a disc and then updated the COMAND. Unfortunately now, I cannot access the Engineering Menu to see what version we're running, but my initial goal has been achieved - we can now play MP3's on the COMAND unit.

I would have liked to still have access to the Engineering Menu to enable Video In Motion - not to play DVD's, but to see the Menu of the DVD for the MP3's. We can play MP3 on either CD or DVD. With the DVD software, we can create some nice menus which enables one to select songs via a particular artist or from a particular album, etc. This is only available when not moving.

Anyway, thanks for the information guys.

Amazing,
About 18 months ago when I spoke to our service department our 211 had in excess of 25 service upgrades since we took delivery.

John

Dont even bother trying to get the engineering mode back after youve had an upgrade, far to risky.

We've had the service upgrades - what they call campaigns, but never anything to the COMAND.

Even when it went in now, they had to replace some bolts on the front suspension as part of a campaign. I know there was one for the SBC and a few others. It would be interesting to find out how there are in total and how many have been carried out on our vehicle.
