Thanks Jimi.
Is there any reason to take a 63 over a 55? The 63 is a better looking car imo. Are there any spec differences?
E63 211 is a newer car but it's a dead end for enthusiast unless you're a massive 55K fan and add a supercharger. M156 63 engine is a one trick pony that shines in only one chassis and that is not the 211. 63 owners tend to change their cars quickly, only want more noise out of them to upset neighbours and are constantly worried about the repair bills, service costs or monthly payments.
The 55 owners are less impulsive with their choice as it is usually carefully calculated, planned and executed. They tend to hang on to their cars much longer, have a lot more fun playing with them on tracks and runways, have better jobs, prettier wives, better looking children etc. You get the idea.
Get the 55 and swap the front end to the 63. This is what 95% of E55 owners on this planet do. Cheap and cheerful.
B0ll0x!
Don't take me wrong mate E55k is awesome but M156 is a masterpiece.

Not forgetting as well Alex that the 55K was fitted to the finest Mercedes ever made; the SLR.The 55 owners are less impulsive with their choice as it is usually carefully calculated, planned and executed. I think i'd miss the Forced induction sensation of a 55k if i went to a m156 (i dont know) never driven one, Now a 5.5 bi turbo that would be a whole different world lol
Having had both, when I owned the E55K I always thought that was a very quick car in standard form until you have a E63 Bi Turbo which puts power and performance into a new perspective.
From what I have read, the new E63 moves this forward again....gosh!
Regards
Richard
Yes i've been in a 5.5 Bi-Turbo and it was crushing lol
The Engine & box generally handle High miles quite well if the correct servicing has been adhered to. Its the Suspension & brakes that can cause your wallet to go on a fast diet though.
How does the 55k handle higher miles? Would you walk away from a sub 10k car?

One last thing AD , I see you have a M5 E39 , nice car, the E55 will not handle as well as your M5, might pull away sharper but after a M5 E39 it may disappoint in the bendies?
I'd concur with this only to add when the suspension and brake components do need replacing, the AMG parts are not unduly expensive in the grand scheme of things. (eg front discs and pads for around £200 isn't expensive)
It must always be remembered these cars were circa £70k new.Keeping on top of jobs during ownership is very important.
And to answer the OP other question, no I wouldn't walk away from a sub £10k car. Buy on condition and regular servicing. There are still good cars to be had for under £10k.
Read my Brutus thread, Think ive covered most basis at 107k
