Considering a W211 E55K

What brand heat exchanger have you got Gav?

I got it through a Company who does performance parts for Z370's etc in the uk, I believe it tobe a Frozen Boost unit from the Usa.

Says it supports upto 1,200hp

Nice one chief. What's the capacity? Is a dual or single pass one? Sorry to bombard you with questions. Been a while since I was looking on mb world at all the options they have fitted over there, & here.

It's a dual pass (in and out are on one side). That said they sell it as "water to air" cooler which would be suitable for cooling the charged air. When what you want is "air to water" - with air passing through to cool down the coolant. Intercoolers for charged air are usually denser and more resistant than the other type.

Alx which Heat Exchangers on the market do you think are the best these days for the E55? It was a year or more when I was last looking at it. Think there were discussions on mb world about single vs dual pass, & the volume. Most seemed dual pass mind. Fried my brain in the end.

Single pass is more efficient than dual. Dual pass have their purpose but mostly with larger cores. I didn't test anything side by side so can't offer any advice on what's better. For reference mine was made to order and measures 24x16x2" but you won't fit it unless you move the steering cooler away. I'm sure Merc85's rad is better than the OEM so maybe he can advise on his intake air temps before and after.

Alx thank you. Is yours single pass? I'm guessing you also went the mist route aswell, amongst other cooling mods?

Sorry OP!

I'll pm you. A bit off topic.

Alx,

Please feel free to share here, it is interesting stuff that I would be keen to know as well.

Alx I did reply to your pm. Not sure it went through, as I think I had problems sending Alps a reply recently.

I think tbf its a play on words, All i know after 3-4 hard pulls i got boost cut and this was in the winter, I Fitted the new cooler and hey presto No boost cuts ever since and we all know how warm its been lately, Its the best thing ive done to the car if im honest.

I wanted the Maximum size H/e without mods to the Bumper or crash bar and the ability to keep the Stock pipework so i could return the car to standard at any time. This is the dealer.

I recoment anyone whos got a e55k and has it mapped they upgrade the cooler, The car seems smoother, more punchy and deffo no boost cuts.:D

Nope;)
If the OP wants to tune the car, an M156 is the last engine he wants.

Doesn't the M156 make 60-70bhp from just a remap at MSL?

And ive seen plenty of 55k engines barely making 50bhp with pulleys, headers and all sorts.......

I agree with AMGeed about the m156. No doubt great engine, i even have its (c63) back boxes to fit to my car, as they sound great, when i find time. However it's naturally aspirated regarding modding! To answer your question, no 55k engines can make a bit more than 50bhp with pulleys and headers.

Alx,

The cooling circuit in my E55 is designed around an aftermarket supercharger which has different requirements than most standard cars. The best approach in my eyes is to take the bumper off and see what you can fit in there and how, then order a custom made rad.

I'm sorry if I sounded like I was criticising your choice Merc - I wasn't. :thumb:

Any larger prerad (heat exchanger) will be better than the standard unit as it will allow for more pulls thus dealying the heat soak. Larger surface area, single pass rads are more efficients than smaller & thicker multi pass rads but as you have said, in your car it works great so I don't see a problem with using or recommending it.

Ok cool, I quite like Merc85's solution, seems to be working well for him.

Has anyone fitted an aftermarket LSD to one of these? Is it needed?

No that's cool bud, :thumb:

I did exactly that, Bumper off then measured up and shopped around for a cooler that size.

Would a 134k mile car put anyone off?

The car is listed as having full MB service history and 523bhp.

It wouldnt put me off thinking it would be a Oil burner or unreliable, BUT what would the mileage be after i'd finished with it?

I do around 4k a year at the moment. So it'll be on around 140k when I sell it I guess.

Apparently uses no oil but no history of sbc pump replacement.

I guess it can't hurt to take a look.
