Continental SportContact vs Michelin Pilot

More than the others I have mentioned? I have 2 x Contisport 2 on the rear so inclined to put 2x contisport 2 on the front as well to ensure that they are all the same but if Pilot Super Sports are the better tyre I might just get these.

I have the original Contis on the front of mine but changed the rears to SS.
Much better tyre IMO.

That's what mine would be, albeit SS on the front and contis on the rear. Just not sure if this or contis all round is the better option though.

In the end I found I got around 15k out of the Continental Sport Contact 3's on the rear (taking them down to 2mm).

Last year I changed all of the tyres for Michelin Primacy HP's and after 12k I have 7mm left on the front and 6mm on the rear... Guess the proof is in the pudding.

I find that the Michelin's are a bit harder though, the Conti's have a smother drive. They are both great on grip and maybe the Michelin are every so slightly better in the rain.

I've got the 5p's on my c63 and find they are quite noisy compared to the advans on another car I test drove

Has anybody tried the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4's yet?
I'm running Continental Sport Contact 5's at the moment and I approach a damp road with trepidation and 3/5's commitment ;)
The Michelin's get "A" rated for wet grip, I'd be interested in chopping in the Continetals early as the shoulders on the fronts were worn when I picked up the car. And since, I have had the alignment done (lazer) they were toeing in badly. It has improved since the adjustment, but I'm still not impressed, and I am a Continental tyre devotee :)

Michelin's own data shows the Continentals to be only 0.3m longer stopping in the wet over it's PS4
That's good, but numbers and data are not always the be all and end all. A subjective feel and feedback are also important; to me and others I'm sure?
Wet handling would be of more relevance to me personally. With a 3.0l V6 diesel lump out front, lateral G's/inertia/understeer seem to be a factor ;)

Agree 100%

Figure, stats manufacturer's data are all well and good but until one experiences the drive, means little.

I ran Pirelli Zeros firstly on my CLS, ok in the dry but were very slippy in the wet. Changed to Michelin PS3 and it's like night and day come the wet roads. Grip is phenomenal right down to approx 3mm tread then they "fall of the cliff".

These are both champagne choices. I've used both, but always replace tyres, when they're due for replacement, with Conti Sports for the simple reason that Contis have better wet weather handling in all the comparison tests. (A quick google will give you the tests)

Because, in the end, what matters to me is not that slightly better turn in, or slight difference in speed of wear; it's how the beggar handles when I have to do something unexpected in the wet.

@MikeInWimbledon - Pilot sport 4's have only been out since the start of the year and replace the Super Sport and Pilot Sport 3's. Apparently they mark a C change in the tyre construction. Due to the use of different rubber compounds used in different areas of the tyre and different lightweight banding to reduce centrifugal G's. Are you running these at the moment?

Hi, Pondman, Sorry my comment was an answer to his original question, comparing Continental ContiSportContact 5 and the Michelin Pilot Primacy HP, I can't comment on those newly launched tyres

As you can see from my thread, I only ever fit ContiSports when replacing, and my exposure to Michelin Pilots is limited to used cars that i've bought - on the SL500 and previously on a 335i (running non-runflats with Birds suspension)

I use the Contisports only because all the professional tests say that their wet weather performance is marginally better.

I'm running a dull E500 and SL500, so I never come anywhere near testing the performance limits of modern tyres.

You're making good points about the Marketing claims, and the issues of running nose heavy 3 litre diesel (I once also ran a 530d and 330d) - all I would suggest is to hunt for comparative tests - because Marketeers sometimes "exaggerate."
