accidentally drove my car through a deeper than expect ford last week and written off the engine. Local dealer is quoting £13,800 for a replacement. Does anyone have any experience of whether this is about right.

If you factor in the replacement labour costs and attachment parts - remove old install new re-attach all the peripherals turbos intercooler egr recirculation injectors pumps etc etc --recode the electronics road test etc might be correct. If that's just the raw main engine block assembly cost seems excessive. At that money must be approaching cat B total loss insurance wise.

I think it will be an insurance write-off just waiting for the confirmation. I'm glad it was a company car but the ridicule from my colleagues has been relentless (am I getting a submarine as a replacement etc)

Surely for nearly £14k it's worth looking for a secondhand replacement - or claiming off your insurance (?)

Ouch £13800 seems rather steep to me, can you not claim through your insurance? What ever it cost its a expensive mistake.

yeah we are claiming through insurance and it is likely to be a write-off. am thinking about buying it and getting a re-con engine as the rest of the car is immaculate

So you planned this from the off set haha. Nice :thumb:

That's more than the cost of yours, depending on your mileage?! Surely an engine can come from a written off one and be fitted for a fraction of that?

it is a Daimler Fleet Management leased car they insist on any replacement parts being new. There is no scope for fitting a re-con engine unless I buy it myself and have it done

I did the same in 1999 in a rover 420 diesel, that cost £4.2k back then with insurance stumping up 75% of cost.

When I bought my 300TE-24 , the very comprehensive service history which came with it showed a replacement engine fitted eighteen months earlier ( by the supplying dealership ) at 380,000 miles ( due to high oil consumption ) with the invoice cost of £6500 listed .

Although I would expect that to be a short motor , it is still a six cylinder engine , and I would imagine more costly than a four cylinder diesel .

That price was in 2006 and I doubt prices have risen that much since then .

I worked at a dealership where we had a Lotus Carlton franchise, we had a few bills for short motors at around £13k ,complete job with all ancillaries was around £21k iirc.

They used to crack the block down the sides of the cylinder head bolts. Seen a couple of those myself.

Yep they certainly were pretty good at lunching themselves! We had one with conrods through the block and cam followers and collets in the sump! Cam chains snapping, warped heads etc etc.

Sounds about right, think 9k of that is the cost of the engine alone, plus God knows how many hours labour at around £120.

It will get written off, I'd let it go if it was me.

To give an idea a V10 M5 is circa £17k fitted at a main dealer BMW using the old ancillaries. Don't ask me how I know lol!

I see you are in Sussex, probably worked in Shoreham then?

How much internal damage has occurred - usually such events result in hydraulic lock .

Another acceptable option might be a professional engine rebuild by a specialist like Crewe Engines .

They said that the engine is seized. I can't believe the block etc. is destroyed so it should be re-buildable. however the car's "owner" insists that it must be replaced with a new engine which I think is likely to mean bye bye car as the insurance are not likely to pay the thick end of £14k for a car that is worth ~ £14,500
