Just joined for some advice. Looking to take a big step and upgrade my car. I have my heart set on either C250 or E250 CDI Sport B/E. As I have never bought a Merc (or anything this new) before could you please help me with:

1. The cost of servicing and the intervals from a dealer and independent garage

2. Cost of any other maintenance required from a dealer and independent garage

3. Cost of tyres and how long they usually last if driven sensibly

4. Cambelt change cost and due mileage/year (if not chain)

5. Most common faults. I have heard of injector and automatic gearbox problems (I am looking for a manual.

Thanks

1. Service intervals will depend on your driving style, but usually are set around 15-16k miles. Depending from what service is due, it can be anything from just over £200 to £500
2. It will depend what exactly you want maintain, but dont expect to pay peanuts.
3. Define sensibly? Depends on tyre size, make, road surface, etc.
4. Dont know, never kept cars long enough to have this changed
5. Onle problem I have ever experienced, its the rattling noise in dashboard in my w204

Is this the first car you will own? Sorry to say, but your questions could be all answered with 'how long is a piece of string...'??

1. As previously mentioned the standard service intervals are 15.5k, I understand that this may vary due to driving characteristics (although mine never has). The standard services alternate between A and B at around £210 and £310 respectively. I use an MB Workshop, which is considerably cheaper than the retailer network at around 10% less and they also give a loyalty discount. Expect to pay around £180 and £260 at an indie.
2. Filters, brake fluid etc are all extras and not part of the standard service. I'm averaging £300 a service (including an ATF change), which would be comparable to an indie, so this would probably average to £350-400 at a MB retailer.
3. My car was fitted with Conti 3's from new they lasted 30k rears, and 40k fronts. That's on 25k pa mixture of around 15k for commute to work (40 mile return) and private journeys, plus 10k motorways business travel. Currently have cont 5's on and they appear to last a little better. Tyres are around £160 each.
4. Not sure if it needs one, not needed one yet (80k).
5. Not had any issues whatsoever. Injectors were an issue for early build cars but pretty much irrelevant beyond this. My car is Sept 2010 and was built following temporary halt to production while these issues were resolved. I personally wouldn't nuy anything other than an auto for this type of car. A confirmed petrolhead I swore I would never buy an auto until I drove my fathers S210 back from Stuttgart 14 years ago. I'll never go back to manual for a family car (you could always keep something for the weekend with 3 pedals and a stick!)

A great car which I intend to keep for as long as it keeps going. My target is 250-300k.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Neil

Mercs can be expensive if something goes wrong. Stick with autos and change the atf at circa 40k intervals - just my view - dont buy blind - if you dont know mercs make friends with your local indy and he will give it the once over for £50 or so - better that than find there's a problem with the aircon for £2k or a turbo for £1.5k etc..... Just my view
