Costco Fuel

Certainly on my trip down South, starting with just over half a tank left of Costco diesel, the car indicated 55MPG for the trip and on refilling it at the usual Sainsbury's I use near home, its true MPG was some decimals over 50MPG.

I think that's the first time I've ever had calculated MPG over 50, normally it's around 46, and around half of this tank of fuel was used for shorter trips which would make the tank to tank figure lower than it could have been.

Good morning all.
I was wondering what members thoughts were a couple of months on since the opening of this topic. I (my family Included) have been using the Costco fuel from Dunston, Gateshead since it opened and I am unable to notice any difference in performance or mpg, not that I regularly perform on the quarter mile or constantly watch my trip meter. I have however noticed that fuel costs for five vehicles have dropped by around 5p a litre which is nice. I use the unleaded and diesel but can't comment on the super 99.
Anyone else had any good or bad experiences to report.

I have always used the BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power. I then had Costco put in there petrol station Nr me (lakeside) When I last went there is was £1.119 and in the bp / shell they were over 20p more (Diesel). I have notice no change in mpg, refinement and been using the Costco fuel for some time now and no problems apart from an injector last year but this has the fault when using the BP and Shell. In fact I will be filling up tonight as long as the M25 isn't buggered

Nearest to me is the new B'ham station but too far just to fill up. I'm hoping the Coventry one opens one up soon, they certainly have the space on their site.

Interesting that Costco's dieel price is now the same as Carrefour Calais (just tanked up there this afternoon) and somewhat cheaper than the Tescos diesel I routinely run my C220 on. Not had any performance problems, get decent MPG according to the dash display, so see no reason to further rape my wallet!

Fuel station at Costco B'ham is now open. Filled up this week Premium Derv 1.109.

Early days but not notices any difference, previous fuel Shell Nitro+ exclusively.

They're opening one in Edinburgh soon. I'll be giving it a try, hopefully it'll do a bit more than save me money!

Im surprised how many of you are using Asda etc at the bare minimum I use premium stations and my supercharged car only get V plus and yes you can feel the difference. Only use supermarket diesel if i really have too (rather than paying MSA prices)

Anyone know how much the diesel is per litre now??

Are you sure it's the same if not equivalent to shell v power diesel?

They do an unleaded, premium unleaded (99 ron) and premium diesel (no standard diesel) so it's their version of V power etc. How it compares to V power, I cannot say.

Oh okay so it would be better to put Costco premium diesel in rather than shell standard and BP standard? But definitely something similar to shell v power diesel

The two video clips do show very nicely the benefits of using premium fuels :thumb:

Actually they don't - they show the benefit of using Kirkland Signature Fuels.

The additives being advertised are in all of the Costco fuels.

These 'benefit's are so unclear that they have been around as long as internet forums.

Consider if those clips were published by a branded fuel indicating that the additives were only in their premium fuel. The underlying message would be that their standard fuel was deficient.

The *only* time I can recall a clear iscernable benefit between one fuel type and another was a long time ago - and that was the *negative* effect of the additives in Formula Shell on some car engines three decades ago.

That's probably true when comparing "standard" fuels. Detergent additives I think will vary but the benefits of those would be hard to quantify and only make a difference in the long term.

For "super" (higher octane) unleaded versus standard there have been a number of independent dyno tests that have shown a small increase in bhp and torque (and therefore a slight improvement in economy, if you don't use the extra power). The increase wasn't huge and varied depending on the engine type, but it was there and measurable. These fuels also typically have a different additives package, which should have long term benefits. Whether this is worth the extra price is another matter of course.

I’d stick my neck out here and say, I’ve never really heard a bad word about Costco - in terms of customer service and quality.

They have a very good tyre service and are exceptionally well priced for Mobil 1 engine oil too

Value for money then it’s a case of do your own sums but their fuels appear to be well priced and good quality. Perhaps they’re using the fuel as a leader towards enticing new members for other purchasing etc? I doubt they make a massive amount per customer/fill on the fuel alone? This seems to be the case for most garages though hence they all have M&S food, Tesco, Subway, Costa Coffee etc attached?

Get you into Costco for the fuel and maybe you’ll buy a tray of croissants or a swimming pool whilst you’re there :D
