Cross threaded wheel nut

Hi, can someone help. Just gone to a garage to have tyres all changed. Mechanic has given me one wheel nut back with cross threading damage on about one quarter of the thread, says must have been put on cross threaded by whoever put this nut on previously. Have gone away from garage and thought about it. Surely if it was cross threaded and he took it of all of the nut thread would have been damaged. Would it be more likely to be damaged by him putting it on with a air controlled wheel nut gun. Does this sound more likely, any ideas. Thanks.

This is the second one in a short time, the thread will only be damaged as far as it went in.

You do not say what the car is, but it is either 12mm or 14mm, so run a tap down the hole. Put a new bolt in by hand and you can feel if it is loose.

If it torques up OK you are fine
