Symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Some people diagnosed with a narcissistic personality disorder are characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance. They have a sense of entitlement and demonstrate grandiosity in their beliefs and behavior. They have a strong need for admiration, but lack feelings of empathy.
Symptoms of this disorder, as defined by the DSM-IV-TR include:

1) Expects to be recognized as superior and special, without superior accomplishments

2) Expects constant attention, admiration and positive reinforcement from others

3) Envies others and believes others envy him/her

4) Is preoccupied with thoughts and fantasies of great success, enormous attractiveness, power, intelligence

5) Lacks the ability to empathize with the feelings or desires of others

6) Is arrogant in attitudes and behavior

7) Has expectations of special treatment that are unrealistic

I did enjoy this!:D

Past tense? You got help for it then? ;)

Enjoyment can be transient!;)

My wife is a clinical psychologist, a colleague of hers is currently running a study into this behaviour and is particularly interested in how some people express it via anonymous internet postings. The early results are very interesting!

Indeed, I bet it is interesting ;)

Imagine the Tourette forum poster...wait a minute...

Go on any political forum/story comments section and you see the war of words. The level of nasty ad hominem attacks gets tedious to the point of taking the central debate or discussion away from the point being discussed. Which is the point. It's easier to attack and humiliate a person than answer their question.

And if these people were face to face, you wonder quite how bold those same people would be.

I have shown both of them this thread, obviously without them knowing anything else about certain people any comments and opinions are just that but they did find that it fitted with the overall pattern of data .

Ask your wife's friend about whether they analyse for forms of rhetoric used, 'ad hominem' attacks being just one form.

'Appeal to authority' is another one often used.

Ad hominem attacks to attempt to neutralise the credibility of the debating opponent, and use of 'appeal to authority' to attempt to add gravitas to their own argument.

Once studied, a skilled debater can pick out these various forms of rhetoric a mile away.

It is a wide ranging study in terms of the forms of analysis used. The age range distribution is quite interesting, the majority are men (probably not surprising) in the range of 35-50 when placed in the context of those expressing themselves via the internet.

I wonder why it is predominantly men in that age group? Women busy with kids? Women are watching tv in the evenings instead? Or simply that women prefer not to debate, or that verbal sparring is more a male trait perhaps?

Also, I wonder who is (a) willing to pay for this kind of research, and (b) interested in the results?

I cannot answer as to who is paying as that is confidential but it is not a drug company, as to the interest, well psychology has to grow and improve in it's understanding as the range of psychological conditions grow and develop.
