Mercedes CLS 320 2007
Hi there

After purchasing my car I ask that question that many people are afraid to ask.

Well I will tell you the specs, please be honest as to whether I got a good deal, or I payed over par.

Car is an July 07 Mercedes CLS 320 cdi, 70,000, full MBSH, it was an ex lease car with 70k on the clock (prob all motorway driving), 18inch alloys (scuffed/marks), command, pre telephone wiring, Light/rain sensors, parktronic (front and rear), brake pads/dics have wear, probs about 40% left, 2 continental and 2 pirelli tyres relatively new, service due @ 76k. Excellent interior apart from 2 marks (slight chip on wooden divider in rear and scratch on command screen), spare key, sat nav (no disc).

I paid 17k from car giant, it is silver (wanted black but for a diesel couldn't find one at this price with this spec), bought the GAP insurance and also warranty (another 1.5k for both).

Your thoughts? Please be honest!

Hi,i find it a bit strange you asking if we think you paid over the odds after buying the car(would have made more sense to ask the same question befrore committing to buying?).I always use either glasses or parkers for reasonably accurate valuations on 2nd hand cars but imho a car is only worth what you are prepared to pay for it after viewing/test driving.

I would say that with your description it is a fair price.
I generally find that cargiant are very competitive.

Car sounds OK but Cargiant is obliged to give you a 6 month warranty anyway so £1500 for gap insurance (GAP to what?) sounds a bit steep.
GAP insurance is normally for new cars not 4 yr old car supermarket jobs.

Well it would be cheaper than any equivalent at a dealer as Car Giant just sell as it is, they dont service it, they dont repair scuffs or dents, they dont refurb the alloys etc like a dealer would.

But as said above why did you buy GAP insurance? Not really much point in getting it on a 4year old car.

Edit: Actually it seems they use AA for their warranty so it should be good but not personally had an AA warranty. Doesnt cover the turbo, ac and a few other things as standard though. http://www.cargiant.co.uk/carsupermarket/warranty.asp

If you are happy, that is all that counts.

It's your car and your money.

There's no point.

It's a bit late to ask. And unless you had a very good deal or a very bad deal the initial answer won't be clear cut. And you're not in either of those categories.

And you won't really know the answer for another a year or two.

Seems reasonable to me. A quick scan of auto trader shows this.

P.S. Wouldn't it actually be nice if instead of people dictating to the OP what questions he is allowed to ask or not, that they just make the choice of answering his questions or not? This would probably make for a more objective and possibly shorter thread.

If your happy that's the best thing.

Had you posted the link before you bought it lets be honest 95% of us would have probably said there is a cheaper / lower miles / better spec one around....

HOWEVER finding the above car is the hard part.

Your happy with it, its a cruising machine and looks are superb so enjoy and don't worry.

for whats its worth I think the price is right :)

I don't understand why people are stating the obvious, he didn't have to ask..

I second this, car giants do price their cars pretty competitively, so rest assured you haven't over paid!

Congrats :thumb:

I think we have all got a bargain at some point and all paid more than we should have at some point. However, the car is worth what someone will pay. You paid £17k so it is worth 17k. The most importnat thing of all is this. Are YOU happy with the car, whether you got it slightly cheapo or slightly expensive. What do YOU think? Does it put a grin on your face? Do you feel like going for a drive at 1am just because you can? If so then that is all that matters. You treated yourself to a VERY nice sounding car.

I think big fat jim has it right.

Last week I took the Z4 out in the early hours just for the pleasure of some obstacle free sweeping curves. It is the first car I have done that with since I had a new Saab 900 turbo back in the 90s.

Haha, I used to go out at 1.00am in the M3 CSL in November in the rain for a 2 hour drive, or get up at 6am and go for a blast before anyone else was about.
Some cars get you like that.

OP, if you're happy with the car that is all that matters. Enjoy!!

Ok to me.

However they had/have a 08 Facelift cdi Grey at 19k, 66k I think, that was also an Ok price I thought.

I am still looking for a CLS Facelift, price is still slipping down week/month by week/month as they still a little new, I'm hoping the new CLS model will push them down quicker.

But buying a nice CLS at 17k with the spec you want is fair to good value I thinks.

Enjoy the car, safe driving....
