I noticed this weekend that there was a leak from below the engine bay of my E220. When i touched it, it was clear that it was not thick enough to be oil, but instead was diesel! Scary thought considering it could have ignited. It had leaked onto the plastic shield that sits underneath the engine and the rest of the car and dribbled all the way back. It must have been leaking for quite a while. Anyway, after some investigation, i noticed a leak of diesel from one of the fittings on the diesel injector pipe, its the nut at the end (swivel nut) one for each cylinder. It only needed a slight tighten and the leak which was very small, stopped!

Dont know if anyone else has experienced this but to be perfectly honest, unless you look under your car or see if there is ever a patch of some fluid where your car was parked, you would not notice it, especially with all those fancy oversized plastic covers they put over the merc engine.

It could either be a leaking injector or simply a clip that has come off one of the rubber hoses!!!

If under warranty take it down immediately to a Stealership or even call Mobilo out...

I've had several leaks on my E320 CDI W211 and they have all been silly little problems that either the dealer or Mobilo has dealt with quickly and efficiently.

With regards to the fuel igniting, just try setting light to a bit of diesel, it's very difficult, not that I've tried of course:rolleyes:

Well Marcos is right. Diesel needs to be very hot (above 60" -70") before it ignites... I've done it, have my ADR license. So Diesel is much saver then Petrol what ignites just like that. But let it be fixed just for your own safety.

There is a recall for the W211 for diesel leakage from the injectors. Definitely get the dealer involved now mate.

Moving to engine section.

Search in the engine section for injectors and you will find previous references.

Fortunately it looks like we are talking of very, very minor drips?

There has been several service bulletins on leaking pipes etc, although most refer to the 320CDI. Definitely take it to your dealer and most importantly have them remove\inspect\clean the undertray. If you don't do this then the accrued fuel will pong, plus it will not evaporate. I have no knowlege of any actual recalls and would appreciate any information on one.

Good luck,
John

My W211 270CDI is back at MB of Harrogate today for a similar problem. Seems to be coming from the joint of the high pressure pipe and the fuel pump. Again, only spotted because it was up on a ramp at the weekend (getting wheel alignment checked) and the guy spotted a little trail running along the undertray.

Thanks Jeremy.

Adding to that

Police may take action if they notice diesel spilling on to the road from a car / lorry as it is so slippery and I think can make driver liable for a subsequent accident... if caught / proved etc

If a biker notices they will tell the driver if they are still the right way up.
