hi I know there are recommended times for atf changes, is there a time or mileage for a change of diff oil

I would expect it to be quite a long interval if not "filled for life" as far as MB are concerned. - Are you giving the rear end a real work out?

There isn't one.... not as far as I am aware of.

It is changed on condition i.e. if during level inspection it is found to have burnt smell or not clean etc. Though you would then also need to investigate the cause.

In general standard diffs (not AMG/LSD etc) are pretty indestructible when used under normal conditions.

I was told by my dealer LSD oil to be changed after running in not sure if they contact me or I they?

A standard diff is a non-serviceable item, in other words fill and forget*.

A factory fitted LSD is recommended an early oil change (can't remember the figures, possibly 2,000 miles?), though on an aftermarket one this is deemed unnecessary. Mine (Quaife) happened to be done after a couple of thousand, but only because it developed an oil leak so had to be removed to get to the seal.

* I usually change mine on all my cars around the 40,000 mile mark, mainly for my own peace of mind.

...on my recently acquired 56k mile r129 sl320 I have had all fluids changed including the diff simply for peace of mind knowing the work has been completed.

I had changed: diff,power steering,hydraulic pump ,coolant,auto box,engine and brake fluids...

In the grand scheme of things the cost of doing this is minimal and in my case its third car role means other than engine oil I will never need to change the other fluids again...

Thought mine is done at the same intervals as the supercharger belt change

Tip:
Those plugs can be tight. Remove the filler/level plug before the drain plug.

I did it not long back. Simple job really, undo fill plug to be sure, remove drain plug and drain. Drain plug back in. Fill oil into filler plug til it runs out. Filler plug on.

Clean up the plugs and use some thread sealer. Helps a lot if you can get it up on a car lift. Car needs to be level.

The gear oil stinks.

I'd add remove and flush/clean the breather

thanks for the advise, changed this morning fuchs titan sintopoid 75/85 used the ramp at work.filler and drain, thread locked.car has only done 23500 but is 4 1/2 years old so changed for peace of mind

I had my Cls 2016 done after running in and they wanted to charge me for the work I explained it's part of the schedule service and it is free.

I would contact them :)
