Hi, I'm a newbie, and I am asking does anyone know anyone who can fix COMAND head units?

My car is a W220 1999 S500L, which I took to my local dealership because the COMAND head unit did not recognise the CD changer.

MB of Sunderland, did the diagnostic tests (or did they?), and came to the conclusion that I needed I new COMAND head unit. I queried why they did not look inside the head unit (loose connection?), but they said they would have to speak to MB before they would be able to speak to Bosch. Does anyone know if this would be true? They appeared more interested in getting £2500 for a new head unit rather than "bothering" to fix it - poor customer service. This garage is also incapable of installing door seals and cleaning cars, and with my previous Merc E-Class put the wrong engine oil in and failed to wash the car at all after its service.

My confidence in service departments at these dealerships as at an all time low. Does anyone know a MB service department that actually knows something about COMAND head units? I feel as if I know more than they do with the all the forums I have read about COMAND.

Also, does anyone know of anyone that sells COMAND units apart from the dealerships and ebay in the UK, if I do actually need one?

If you give me the exact part number of the comand unit you want, I'll se if I can get one for you. However, I dont normally deal in S class units.

Curiosity Got The Cat...

Why not S class units??

They are massively more complicated to retro fit than A/B/C/CLK/ML/GL units. However, never say never.......

This is the same problem that I am experiencing. And no, I have not got it fixed yet. Suspect a dodgy cable as we have put a new head unit in and a new autochanger in. Isn't high on my list of priorities thanks to the 3.5" jack input...

PS Alfie, remember that email I sent you... I have my car back and the weather is still good...

I've Used Audiocomp.de In Germany He's A Reliable Guy And When I Visited His Office He Had Loads Of Merc Nav Units And Seemed Pretty Good.

Hold up am I missing something here, just because a COMAND system doesn't recognise a CD changer doesn't mean its busted right!?

Have you tried disconnecting the changer or head unit and reconnecting them. That would be my first step before even considering buying a replacement!

My radio didn't recognise my changer once and it turned out the D2B fibre optic cable had loosened itself slightly.

I am still kicking my self for not setting up a Command repair center. It is no different to any other AV service as far as the repairs go. With several hundred engineers going on the scrap heap in this last 18 months its a shame that any of them did not know that Command existed, I did not 2 years ago

Why not do it? If you can get test rigs, documentation and a stable supply of parts then why not?

Of course financial success would depend on there being sufficient profit margin to make it viable. As you can now buy these units relatively cheaply on eBay the price-sensitive end of the market will buy there or scrap the unit

If I were to do it I'd want an agreement with MBUK to repair units for their dealers. That's where the market lies, I'd have thought
