Does your AMG induce hatred on the road?

Black car with a black/silver numberplate and 19" AMG wheels with lowering links is barrried up? Rudebwoi exhaust?

Did you read the fact that the negative comments were BEFORE I got the car back today? With a resonator and primary cat delete - something many on here have done?

And the fact the car is not much louder than a C63 with sports exhaust even now?

Friendly bunch on here aren't you (!)

My comments were simply that I was surprised at how little attention and few comments I got in a 997 turbo vs. many in the SL55.

The 997 is a proper sports cars, people respect it and will therefore probably only comment on driver - too old, bald etc.

AMGs (and ///M) cars are for us who can't have a proper sports car - need practicality etc. and these cars are a little brash (sound) and have to be because they are based on regular models. They are also pretty common looking so unless flooring it, blend in.

Now, an SL AMG, is neither of the above - it's more of a "couldn't get a proper Porker so look at me". Clearly not the case here with Vinnie but people out there don't know that.

There are a number of very friendly people on here so don't be put off with a bit of forum banter. As others have said enjoy your car and ignore those who don't.

I don't know about that, 911 turbo is now what, £120k new? I bet the current SL63 AMG when specced well enough is about the same cost!

Most people don't know the difference between a C2 and a turbo, and a C2 is probably about 70k new, so far cheaper than an SL AMG!

Ah well, we gots to live our own lives... I don't drive around residential areas at midnight flooring it and waking up babies, but when I do floor it I like to be able to make some noise..

It seems that (and the black numberplate - incidentally, I have had nothing but compliments about that, usually from middle aged middle class chaps) has seemed to offend some of the posters on here.

I had hoped this forum was a little more grown up than PistonHeads can be, but to be honest I think I'll go back there.

My 'proper barried' car BTW... enjoy flaming chaps.

I agree well specked Sl63 comes in at around 130-140 and is another option instead of a proper porker.

But it's all about first impressions. The average guy doesn't know that and doesn't take it into account. Generally a Porsche is considered the real thing and others are 'trying'.

Also I hope having an AMG does not induce hatred as I'm getting my first one on Monday but most of the comments in the thread have reassured me somewhat.

Vinnie, how do you get away with the plate. I have always wanted to do my plates like that on mine, but was told it was a definite no no as car as Plod is concerned.

Have you had any issues? Either way it looks spot on mate :thumb:

I haven't been pulled over yet and it's been on for two months +

I have had many plod give it a second look but I can only assume that they're allowing it as the letters and spacing are standard... I assume they are more concerned about plates where the owner has tried to doctor the lettering or font.

It would look great on your car with the black wheels!

I know it's not to everybody's taste, but then neither is an SL55 or 911 turbo... I hardly think the car looks chavvy or barried as a result of a black and silver plate (they are legal on classic cars older than ? years anyway).

:thumb: Nice looking SL Vinnie. Loving the split rims too.
Stick around.............we aren't a bad bunch once you get used to the banter:D

To those who seem to think it's the loud exhaust, read my comments about it on the other thread.

FYI, I only got the car back with the exhaust today. It's had a primary cat and muffler delete before that - which I notice many of you guys with SL55s have too.

So do try to read my posts before criticising guys, you may not look quite so silly then.

The comments I have had have all been prior to today - most positive, but some rather negative, and some simply driving at a snails pace in traffic.

And those people accusing AMG owners of looking down on people with non AMG cars - chip on your shoulders chaps? Nobody suggested anything of the sort.

My comments were simply that I was surprised at how little attention and few comments I got in a 997 turbo vs. many in the SL55.

The SL55 is a weekend car which will get maybe 2-3k miles of use a year - I wanted to see how the exhaust sounded as it had a sodding huge hole in the rear box and needed fixing!

If it starts becoming annoying and/or embarrassing, I will simply swap it...

Besides, a lowered SL55 with black numberplates (go on, I'm sure some will have something to say) and 19" wheels is hardly subtle!

I can confidently say it's still a lot quieter than my cousins F458, both on startup and when driven!

Illegal...:p Unless your car was manufactured before 1st Jan 1973?

Cheers mate :)

I wish they were split rims, I am pretty sure they are one piece replicas, but they were already on the car and I think they look good so they're staying :D

I have noticed something about my SL55... people (non petrol heads) seem to dislike it.

Yes it's loud, but then so is my 911 turbo. My 911 is 2008 and I have had it since new, and my SL55 is 2003 and I've had it for a few months, so it's worth less than a new BMW 320d.

Yet I've had people swear at me, give me dirty looks, just generally get really angry at me on the road, sometimes when just moving along slowly in traffic minding my own business!

You may say it's my driving style, but I have had no issues in the 911 - people in fact move over - nothing in my recently sold 320d Msport, my former 535d etc.. and my driving style is very much the same.. in fact, I've calmed down as I've got older.

Is it AMG or is it the SL? Do people think it's a 'flash' car because it's a convertible?

Just wondered whether anyone else has experienced this, or whether I just look like a cnut :D

I would have thought the 911 was more hated IMO but saying that I got the same in my slk so mite be a convertible thing

Never noticed anything like hatred, but they can hate me all they like when I leave 'em for dead.....

Hypothetically; not that I would ever do anything like that ;)

Yeah, I expect he knows that, but is taking the chance as like he says the letters are all spaced correctly, the right size etc. so hopefully Plod will go after more serious offenders.

I don't get why they are illegal actually as if they are legal for an older car then there can not really be any earthly reason why you couldn't have them on any car.

Not big on road traffic law and reasons for it, are you?

Ever heard of BS AU 145d. ;)

There's loads of good people here !

I've never seen any car create hatred...it's not the car, it's the driver.
