Hi folks. The aux belt on my '09 C63 shredded this morning - lost power steering, battery light came on. Fortunately I was less than a mile from home so made it back OK.

My local MB specialist garage is 2 miles / 5 mins away and I'm booked in for Monday morning. The question is - is it OK to do this drive, or given that (I think) the coolant pump is driven by this belt could it overheat in that time?

Thanks,

Bobsta

I would not risk it,the coolant will not be circulating and you could cook something in the block. Have you got breakdown recovery ? If you get it recovered to the garage.

No recovery/breakdown cover unfortunately. The car's been so reliable and other car is under warranty so covered.
I'll check with the garage if they could come get it for a sensible price.

Tow it in with your other car?

Thanks, yeah may give towing a go. Will need to train the wife on the subtleties of driving whilst towing first. :)

Just fished this out of the engine bay. Suspect it's the cause of the belt going - any ideas which pulley this is/was part of?

Broken idler pulley, most likely seized up and needs a new one.
Makes sense. Thanks.

58,600 miles

I had a similar problem when I had my S Class, the belt was ok, but the pump, as we later discovered, was not. From cold engine, I drove the car approximately 3 miles to my Indie and the temperature just crept into the red. Putting the heater on full blast will help dissipate some heat from the engine. Not sure how fast your engine will heat up as opposed to my S Class 320 petrol

I had a bjt of a brainwave this morning... decided to drive it half way there today and will do the other half in the morning. Oil and water temps got to around 58deg so all good.
Fingers crossed I've got enough juice left to start it in the morning.
