Drove the new E350 CDI Coupe

Well, car back all nice and clean, once again quiet and pretty responsive after another injector reset.
Very happy with my first (free) service as the job card returned stating there was a noise coming from the rear of the car. Turns out they fitted new rear discs FOC as one had very bad score marks on it! I did tell the service dept after they called that although I hadn't noticed the noise, I did notice a few weeks after I bought the car that one rear disc had developed bad score marks and I presumed they would wear out.
The dealer called MB and they authorised for new rear discs :) .
With regards to the steering recall they checked the seals and said all was ok but as the steering pumps were not on sale at the moment and the recall wasn't official there was no more that could be done. They did say that when the recall was official that they would probably just call the car in and fit a new steering pump.

So although still have a delay in setting off in comfort mode and injector noise every few thousand mile I am actually happy with the service today :) .

Sounding like an idiot - does this apply to the 350CDI engine in the Coupe only ?

Johny, how long did the fix take? was it a while-u-wait or and all day job?

Probably half a day normally, quick to update the ecu, but the injector calibration takes longer.

Saorbust, the problem exists on the saloon also, but it is a much bigger car, you are further from the engine, and you just don't hear it so much. My service manager has a 350cdi saloon with 6k on the clock, and has noticed the truck noise now.

My 350 sport coupe still running great, no degradation still. I am really very happy with the car now. 33k miles on the clock.

Thanks - I was refering to the engine in my CLS350CDI - I think it's the same engine.

Sounds okay - but the fuel economy was the thing that flagged this to me. It's 40mpg on a long run - some here seem to imply it should be 45 ish. I wonder...... It's a 59 plate built in August 09. I'll check the official figures - but thanks for replying.

Just to add my tuppence on the mpg debate - I have never, ever seen my MPG approach the magical 40. My average (over a mixture of road types including motorways) is 29.1

On pure motorway the highest I have ever seen it reach is 37 mpg.

wowsers , i was getting 33 in my 220CDI in rush hour traffic on the way home last night from cold. :dk:

The best I have every had on a run is 40mpg in the 350 cdi s coupe. 45 may be achievable if very careful on acceleration, and mindful of max speed.

I had a cls 320 cdi, which was rarely above 38.

I am a spirited driver, cruising at typically 80 90 (when on the autobahn).

Here is the Merc Technical number for the permanent fix that cured my car (so far anyway).
(Technical Info) G107.16 - P - 048656
Hello everyone,

Took my 2010 C350CDI to Robinsons in Peterborough and saw Simon Dodson who was very helpful (as were all the staff who couldn't have been more pleasant...).

Simon was fully aware of the problems with the "350" version of the 3 litre V6 engine having heard to combustion roar when suddenly accelerating from low speed and also the "pinking" noise on his own car.

Anyway, it transpires that a permanent software update IS available from Mercedes in Germany but the instruction to dealers is only to offer it to customers who have noticed and/or complained about the noise.

I drove up from Kent this morning and was immediately provided with a cup of tea and Danish pastry! My car was taken away straight away for work to start.

An hour or so later the car was returned (washed) so I drove home really hoping the car would finally live up to my expectations...

Obviously, the car was still warm when I set out but, wow, what a difference! Before the fix, I would get an unpleasant combustion roar / knock when pushing the accelerator quickly overlaid by a "fizzing" or "pinking" noise between 1,000-2,000rpm. All this seems to have been eradicated completely. Previously, even blipping the accelerator in the driveway would produce the unpleasant noise; not now! The whole car feels much smoother and more refined, almost to the point of being virtually as good as a petrol V6 - after the last 6 months I never thought I'd be able to say that!

I've yet to start the car from (fully) cold of course. I accept that any diesel will have a "diesel-ly" tone and have a bit more knock when cold but, at last, I am hopeful that the unpleasant noises will be reduced when the car is cold (as well as when fully warmed through).

All in all, superb, friendly and knowledgeable service from everyone in Peterborough and the fix seems to have worked for me too; long may it last!

Steve

Mine was in last week and although had the injectors reset I still don't think it sounds like how your'e describing yours.
I am down in kent at the moment and leaving tomorrow so will call them and see if I can drop in.

Spoke to my dealer today who has booked me in.

They are fully aware of the problem and of the permenant fix but don't think that it is as permenant as MB would think - just their take on it mind you. Not got it in for a while due to work but will report back as and when.

Also asked about MPG and was told they doubted it would improve it. Wait and see I guess.

Just to clarify - I live in Kent and drove to Mercedes dealer in Peterborough as they seemed the best informed about the problem.

I remain slightly concerned that the fix won't be permanent (although how electronic systems can "go out of tune" I do not know!). However, I started the car from cold this morning and it was REALLY noticeably less rattly with no overlying "fizzing" or "pinking" noise from the engine's top end. Unpleasant combustion roar / knock on wide throttle openings also eradicated.

I've been telling everyone at work that the car is now, finally, as refined as I expected it to be and not, frankly, an embarrassment.

Robinsons in Peterborough really were exceptionally helpful, friendly and efficient and seemed genuinely concerned as to whether the fix (sold as permanent by Mercedes in Germany) works - so far, I was say a resounding "YES"...

I spoke to Simon at Robinsons, very helpful although after checking my chasis it would appear I have the latest software installed.
He did say that if this didn't fix the issue that my dealer should raise a case with MB.
I did notice that even after the last couple of injector resets the noise didn't totally go away and came back sooner along with sluggish performance.
Once again not happy, my car is just turning 1 year old next month and can honestly say I haven't even had 1 month of nice motoring out of it.
The fleet manager at our work showed me a new passat gt 2.0 diesel although basic, was just as loaded as my car and this was only 25k new.

Tempted to put the pressure up now with MB.

Driving from Kent up to lincolnshire early tomorrow, if anyone is around the m11/a1 and wanted to exchange e350 noises let me know.

Just hope my fix lasts - I must say though that when Mercedes Canterbury supposedly reset the injectors back in the summer there was NOWHERE near as much of a difference. To be frank, this time it is so marked it almost feels like a different (and much better) engine!

3K miles in, and everything still good. By now previous fixes had drifted away. Fuel consumption on a run is better by 3 - 4 MPG. The car feels very refined now, I love it!

I am not sure if I was hearing things the other day. Of course it still seems noisey/rattley at cold start and also at work in the underground carpark. But after I had set off and dropped by the services after a 2 hr drive it sounded fine.
Just been out again tonight and the same, it seems like it is still ok and also the gear changes seem tighter and hold on to the gears longer in C mode. Its as if the last update has reversed the effects and now it is learning to be quieter and learning the gear changes. Time will tell.....

Mine got better over a period of a few days. The ecu is doing it's job now, and adjusting and learning as it goes. It really is a different car. There is still some cold diesel noise, but no rattle and pinking, and very smooth running when cold in comparison. As soon as the revs are up, it is very refined, and when warm, extremely refined.

Simon the SM calls every two weeks to see how it is. I reckon Merc will roll it out to everyone When they are sure it performs well in the field. God only knows how they realeased such a pile of c##p in the first place.
