I want to buy an E series estate, diesel. (Would prefer a W124 but the 'boss' doesn't want an 'old car' on the drive!)

Honest John's review is fairly frightening! I'd appreciate any advice on best year (I'm looking at older, late 90's) or any warning signs to look out for when looking over/test driving.

Thanks in anticipation.

lol.. i love all cars.. just something different..even a lovely Pogoda one day.. for now.. i want a 1991/1992/1993 w140

;)

By and large a late W124 estate is a better bet than an early W210 and, as a result, it'll cost you more money

They're very different cars so I'd decide on which you want then search the forum for "W210 rust buying" and "W124 buying"

Don't be put off by the list of W124 problems on Honest John's site

Also IIRC Honest John quotes the W210 as having the Valeo radiator problem.

I am certain that the Valeo issue was only with W211's.

Someone should tell Honest John not to tell porkies. ;)

Dont forget not all the faults on johns site will happen to every car, but the rust is the exception especially on the 210:D, 124 also rust as they are now old, newest must be 14 years old now.
Also 203 rust, 220, 221 basically all of them but 210 is a master at it.

Let's start with the terminology. BMW call their cars " series " as in 5 series etc. We don't want to go there. However Mercedes have class, as in E Class etc.

W210 E class is very good, but as the boss says it is an old car. W211 is still current until after Frankfurt. 320CDI goes well but is thirsty if you only do short journeys. E220 cdi a better bet around town.

My first W210 was rusty but my second facelift one is fine, I did see the other day a Silver y plated facelift estate that was more rusty than an old 80s Ford. I was horridied! Why wouldn't she sort it out!!

I preferred my 210 to my 211 in the way it drove. It was more economical as well, although the 211 accelerates better. But, my 210 rusted on all four wheel arches and the boot, so I got rid of it.

Here is the LINK to the W210 review containing the incorrect information.

I've sent an email to Honest John. ;)

YAY!

I got an email and a thank you from Honest John for spotting the mistake on the W210 review on his site.

I've awarded myself one of these. :bannana:
