E240 or E270cdi ?

I only have a 220CDI but when sitting inside with the windows closed I would say the noise levels are fine and my previous car was a Lexus GS300, which is very quiet so I am not accustomed to noisy cars.
However, when I opened the windows once my 9 year old did ask why the car sounded like a lorry :o . Luckily I don’t need the windows open as the climate control keeps it comfortable ;) .
When I think about the £3200 odd I am saving in fuel each year I am very happy with my decision to go for diesel :bannana: . Obviously if your not doing 60k miles a year then the savings may not be as attractive.

SMOKE, SMOKE!!!!!!! I would go ballistic if our car smoked, even my children don't smoke.

Its a great engine, but I have seen loads of them smoke and get a bit smelly when accelerating. Have you followed one?

Mine only smokes when I thrash the **** out of it. Other than that it's clean, I suppose when the injectors wear things might get a bit smokey.

I drive lots of dieslels - and some of them Merc's and they are amazing. Gone are the days of smokey, noisy chug along driving. Today's diesels are quite, clean and fly along.

Did a race track day with MB earlier this year - almost all diesels they were amazing. I'd go for diesel.

PS - we do have a Voyager diesel - merc CRD engine - not much passes it!

I test drove both the E240 and E270. The E240 was almost enough to put me off the car complately as it made the car feel heavy and slow. The dealer then arranged the test drive in the E270 and I was sold!

;) :) You jammy, jammy devil. Envy, envy, jealous :)

Regards,
fellow smokey, noisey, sluggish diesel owner
John (I just hope we do not appear to ver protective towards our choice of engine)

It is true that the 220s can show a bit of smoke at pull away but not 270 or 320 Cdis.

If you see a smokey one it's got a problem.

Also how does a catalysed diesel get to be smelly, the cat cleans up the smell?

Erm. Umm. My 320CDI produces quite a lot of smoke, both when idle and when pulling away. Should I be worried? What should I be looking for?

Probably leaking injectors or a faulty MAF.

Take it into the dealer, there are some recent mods to be performed.

Run a good dose of injector cleaner through the system first in case that cleans it up.

What exactly do you mean by mods? Changes of programming in the ECU? And is this something I'd expect to pay for at a dealer?

Also, and feel free to reply with a link to the answer, what exactly is injector cleaner, where do I get it and how do I run it through the system? :-)

Thanks,

-simon

Hi Simon,
Dieselman is someone that knows his 'onions' (and diesels). If your vehicle is 'smoking' then there is a problem. Is it still under warranty?

John

Oh I'm well aware of that - which is why I worry when he says worry :-)

No, it's from March 2000, a W210 E320 CDI. I do have an aftermarket warranty (mechanical breakdown insurance) type thing though, so if stuff does need fixing then I can probably try claiming on that!

What the warranty won't pay for, however, is "investigative" work. So if something is broken I gotta find out myself :-(

Cheers,

-simon

Simon, Don't worry too much the smoking sounds like a dribbling injector, which just happens to be one of the recall mods that the dealers have been told to check on. ;)

Ask at the dealers, you will be surprised how accomodating some will be. :)

Injector cleaner comes in many guises, I personally use this every tankful. They are available at all motorist shops.

Sorry, but I have seen them. Lots of them. Not thick clouds of smoke, but small amounts emitting from the exhaust when accelerating. And it smells too. Not in a dirty, smoky old diesel kind of way but its a distinct smell. I can smell it from almost every diesel I follow, if they are working the engine.

Perhaps I am more sensitive to it than some of you guys.

The first time we start our dirty, smelly, noisey diesel particularly on a cold morning we get a 'perfumey' type pong. (very cheap perrfume usually located in places where perhaps 'gentlemen do not frequent  )

I don't know if this is due to any additive, catalytic convertor, or perhaps the places we frequent?

So I 'think' I might be agreeing with Robbo on the smellie issue.

Morning everyone,
John

I have a c240 v6 petrol as my everyday car, and for the last week I have been using a ML270CDI as a borrow whilst my Father is on holiday. 240 is 1997 and 73000 miles, 270 is 2004 and 3000 miles

The purpose of the borrow has been just to learn about diesels, as I fancy an E-class diesel at some point in the future.

The 240 is superquiet, "is it running?", supersmooth, "is it running?", and when you boot it it howls nicely and takes off. It does not have loads of torque. It goes down 2 gears and sometimes 3 gears to really get going.

The 270 is actually 2 cars in one. If you drive less than 10 miles it is very noisy, and very slow, and very unresponsive. After 10 miles is less noisy, and quite nippy. It is very deceptive how quick it is. The revs seem to hold at 2500rpm a lot of the time, yet it is accelerating. If you just listen to the engine you end up thinking you're not going faster, but you are. Sadly, you have to listen to the engine an awful lot. God help you if you roll the windows down.

Fuel consumption? No idea. If I was worried I'd drive a small car.

Will I "convert" to that E-class one day? Yes, probably but only after an extended test-drive to prove it is quiet in the cabin. The ML certainly is not quiet

Sounds like I have a similar problem to Simon. My E320CDI has also taken to smoking a lot lately. I use Miller's in every tankful and have even tried a dose of Wynn's injector cleaner, without much change. My car is still under warranty, so what should I be asking them to check?

Goalc, the free engine upgrade offer is there to liquidate stock as both the 270 and the 320CDI engines are being replaced next year with the 280 and 350CDI.
Personnally I would go for the 270CDI without hesitation. Far more mid-range torque makes driving easier and although the engine might not be as quiet as the 240, the fact that you need to rev the petrol engine harder to get that mid-range push should compensate partly for the noise element.
