E240 or E270cdi ?

nickmann said:
The 270 is actually 2 cars in one. If you drive less than 10 miles it is very noisy, and very slow, and very unresponsive.

That's because its an ML, if you tried the 240 engine in the ML i'm sure you'd say it was very slow and unresponsive!

Compare the C240 to the C270, or the E240 to the E270. I don't believe there is any way on earch the C270 or E270 could be described as slow or unresponsive (let alone 'very').

Hi Richard,
I totally agree, I must be tactful here as there are a lot of very happy ML owners on this excellent forum, but the ML does not have the same insulation qualities as the 211 and as you have quite rightly stated the ML is a completely different vehicle. I'm afraid I cannot see the logic on this one. 'Chalk and cheese' comes to mind.

Nick
Please do not think I am being sarcastic, far from it, but please compare similar models.

Good luck with your decision,
John

Yes, I'm sure you are right. It needs a LOT more engine - its a big heavy lump with a big heavy drive system. I would like to try the E270 but I am afraid to in case its too nice!!

Have you driven the ML? I'm interested in the noise problem, and I assume that the E is silent, at least in the cabin if not from outside. It seems to me that the BMW diesels are very quiet from outside, so it is obviously possible.

I haven't even driven an ML. My engine does sound quite noisy around town, especially 20-30mph. But at other speeds I don't find I hear the engine at all.

Hi Nick,
I posted a scientific study carried out by Mercedes-Benz on the 320CDI compared to the 320 petrol. Unfortunately the diesel was fitted in an estate and the petrol in the saloon so it is open to a little criticism.

The interesting fact on the study though was that at 30mph the decibel readings were 56 to 53 in the petrol. However above 30mph the noise level inside the two vehicles was indentical. No difference what so ever. The biggest difference is at tickover, diesel is 49 to petrols 43. So I do not think you can accuse either one as being deafeningly loud.

Yes I have had an ML270, it was a demonstrator that we had for a week, and yes they are louder. That is being unfair to the ML though because if you compare it to any diesel 4 x4 in its price range you will be pleasantly surprised at how quiet the ML is.

Nice speaking to you,
John

Thanks. If they are the same at 30 and up in the salloon and estate cars then that's a real plus for the diesel. I'm not worried about the smell, modern diesels don't pong. Performance would be fine on the 320.

I take your point about not being fair to the ML but that's not my concern, I was just worried that the saloon or estate would as noisy.

Now I definitely need to avoid that test-drive!!

Re smoking 220's....I ran a E220 CDI for 65,000 miles or so and yes they do tend to smoke, but normally only when you boot the throttle, at which point you get a puff which then clears.

I was initially worried and looked at every 220 I came across and soon realised they all do it.

I came to the conclusion that as long as there was not a permanent trail of smoke behind you that this was a trait of the 220.

My car still performed very well and returned excellent economy and there was never any "nailing", ie noise from a blocked injector.

Well I thought I'd found the right car at the right price, and then..... I hear that the 270 is being replaced early next year by a V6 3 litre diesel. Is this true ?

My concern is that if I get the 270 now, what will the new V6 (which I guess will be smoother, quieter, more powerful and probably more economical) do to the residual values....

Help ! Any thoughts ??!!

I'm not sure it has been confirmed that the 270 engine is being replaced. In europe the E280CDi is sold in parallel.

Personally I hope they do update the engines as it will be a good excuse for me to change :)

We told you about this in your earlier posts. Both the 280 and 320 will be the same V6 engine with just slight modifications, and they will be produced May/June time.

Also like I asked many posts ago... Have you considered waiting for just a very few months before placing your order?

Good luck with your decision,
John

I dont think I answered the original posters question. I would go for the E270 over the E240.

Hi, I have an E220CDI estate and this replaced my C230K saloon. Perhaps the most compelling benefit is the tank range 600-700 as opposed to less than 300 some ;) times. We all like comfort and quality of life. Well every fuel station I've been to is cold and windy and a detour on my journey home. Anything to reduce the number of visits, by up to half is a big bonus! Mine returns approx 40 mpg (50 on a good run), my friends E240 is doing about 24mpg...

I'm another vote for the diesel.

After 20 years in petrol cars including a TVR Chimaera, the most impressive motorway performance I've known is from the E320 CDi in the garage now.

And its not just about the acceleration. Its effortless, everywhere. And it gets 45MPG on a run so I don't have to keep stopping. For long distance journeys point to point its just waaaay faster than the TVR was.

The same applies for C Class. The C270 is miles quicker than the C240.
I drove both, one after the other. The C270 also felt much more solid to drive than my recent Lexus GS300 MkII despite it being quite a bit smaller. I expected the C Class to drive like a 3 series but I think it's a much more solid ride than that car. In terms of engine noise my Lexus was so quiet I could hardly hear it but that didn't make the driving experience great. The C270s I have driven have a nice grunt to the engine when revving but as soon as they cruised they were as quiet as the Lexus. Much better in my opinion. I pick my 03 C270 CDI Avantagarde on Saturday. Hope I've made the right choice !
