E270CDI Alternator Failure?

Guys

My W211 E270CDI is poorly, Battery Warning on display in red advising to go into workshop, ESP failure, Stop Vehicle etc!

Called in to see a friend and he plugged car into WinStar which shows charge running at only 11.6v with drop to 11.4v or below with lighting load.

I am assuming alternator failure, but bit of a long shot, does anyone know of any other causes of these symptoms?

Thanks in advance

Ade

I think that this is a common fault on the W211; depending how old the car is ask MB to see if they will contribute - they are water cooled and not cheap - I think they are 5 or 600 pounds.

I recently had a similar problem. Indie told me it was a water cooled £800 alternator. Indie removed it for me, i shopped around and found an auto electrical shop who said they could repair it for approx £40. Unfortunately, when they took it apart, the back bearing holder was broken, so had to go for a replacement, total bill just over £700. Indie did a brilliant job and were prepared to store my car for the week while i tried to get the alternator fixed elsewhere and thus save a few hard earned pennies.

Thanks guys, I booked the car in this morning.

We are going to start by getting the battery fully charged, then testing the voltage regulator and going from there!

Have been given the option of lucas or bosch alternator replacement via specialist supplier.

Anyone have any preference?

Stick with Bosch, you cant go wrong.
