E270CDI Economy

I've now had my '03 E270CDI auto for a month and covered ~900 miles. However, the MPG is somewhat less than expected - I'm getting 18-23mpg urban and 38mpg is the best I've ever achieved cruising at 60mph, despite driving like a nun. This is significantly down on MB figures (29 urban, 52 extra urban).

Is this normal? Do I need to give the car longer to bed in?

Your comments would be appreciated.

Quite likely, the engine will still be quite tight I imagine, Brian WH and Richard M on this forum both have w211 CDIs (from new), maybe they can shed some more light on this :)

I wouldn't trust the artificially-simulated rolling-road MPG figures from anyone! Let the owner community answer! ;)

It may as Nick said just need running in properly, although I don't remember mine improving that much, but I'd give it another 1000 miles or so.

A good test is to travel at 60 with the cruise control on (preferably on a flat motorway) and then reset the trip computer for the current journey. It should then give 50mpg at that speed, the average from start is always lower because of the cold start.

On my drive to work (2 miles across town then 25 miles on the motorway) I normally get 40mpg, that’s at varying speeds – M25 for you!. Driving home on A roads I only get about 32-33mpg but that’s driving enthusiastically.

Driving around down I get 25-30mpg, but I don’t do that many short distances.

Richard,

Mine has an auto box - is yours manual or auto?

Also when sitting in traffic the (recently reset) mpg counter seems to drop .1 every 2 seconds - quite alarming! Do you experience this?

As Richard says it is the wrong time of year to get best results, too long to warm up. Takes the first 5 miles at low mpg. :(

Keep smiling long term you will see the results mate. :bannana:

Brian - can you remember whether your economy improved with the miles, and if so, was it significant?

Ran it in for 1500 miles at less than 3000rpm (105mph in mine) no fast acceleration etc and got a reasonable mpg. It did improve after that as like you I had mine in the Winter.

Thanks Richard, Brian.

BTW Brian, mine exactly the same as yours apart from .5 litres and sat nav. Nice!

Mine's an auto too. Yes thats normal if its sitting running for the mpg to drop, your using fuel but not covering any miles. You'll notice it more if you've just reset the computer as its only averaging over the time your stationary.

Went on 30 mile round trip at an average of 30-40mph yesterday and achieved 31mpg. My previous car, a BMW 330ci, could do that!

Is my E270CDI faulty, or do I have unrealistic expectations?

I have a E220CDI, a fill up 25 quid and it says i should get around 350-400 miles range to start with. Then I barely cover 200 miles and its getting empty. I once filled up to top around 40 quid. The dealer said u should get around 600 miles on full tank. I managed about near 400 if that. I think my driving is more inner city and no more than 40mph with plenty of stops. But with my previous car a 2.0VTEC 25 quid would last me 300 miles....i find that since converting to diesel which is supposed to save me money...and 220cdi is the best ecomony.....I'm no better off in fuel usuage in fact worse than a 2l petrol model with 145bhp. U can tell if your car is using more or less fuel....and my reasoning is the auto....it seems to like higher gears due to my driving style....in my other car i wouldn't hang on lower gears for long to waste petrol...but with auto...I have no choice....not fiddled with manual overide yet.

I always get at least 500 miles from the tank, even over Christmas when I was just driving around town and averaged in the low 30's. But.... I'm guessing you have the smaller fuel tank? Not the 80 litre tank Bryan and I have that costs > £60 to fill up.

My last car, a 6 cylinder 2 litre petrol only averaged about 24mpg with the same driving as I do in the E270, now I get about 34 average and have quite a lot more power so I'm happy. I do drive the car pretty hard, but have a long run to work everyday which helps the mpg.

It would be good to get someone’s input who has a manual E270.

I have an Avantagarde which comes with the 80 litre tank.

Just took mine for a run on the motorway, set the cruise at 60 and reset the computer. Averaged 45-46 overall (uphill/downhill) - I guess the last 6 or 7 should come with extra miles. If I drive harder though, the MPG falls off a cliff.

I find that my E320 CDI averages about 28 - 33mpg on a mixed run. Around town I usually get about 27mpg.
I went to Heathrow a while back and got 48mpg over the whole journey but I think thats because I was just sitting in traffic doing 50mph all the way round the M25.
My economy has got slightly better with the miles so I will wait to hit the 30k mark and see if it has improved then. BTW I usualy manage over 500mls per tankfull.

I guess my disappointment stems from the fact I have friends with VW/Peugeot diesels who brag about regularly getting an average of 40MPG+ even though the manufacturers figures are broadly similar.

I guess the extra weight + auto means that stop-start journeys take their toll more on consumption.

It'd be interesting to hear how this compares to something like a 240 or 320 petrol. Just so I can feel good. ;)

Not an E but owning a C240 I get between 24 and 32 with an average week giving me 28MPG and of course the C is lighter than you E class.

Even my 230 komp will do 36mpg with a good run(70 + miles ) @75 mph`ish.

You will lose about 5 Mpg due to the auto box. A passat 2.5 Tdi Tip will return about 33 Mpg in normal driving.

I test drove a 270 CDi when they first came out and averaged 40Mpg including seeing away a Peugeot 206 GTi from rest to very high speed. :D

Dieselman: 40mpg? What kind of driving did that involve, apart from your decadent (but irrresistable) boy racer antics?

I tend to find thing are fine on the flat/downhill, then uphill stretches really have a major major impact, even if I'm really gentle.
