For some time I've had a bit of an exhaust rattle from beneath the E300TD saloon.
Though it was one of those heat shields .... But Not-so.

Back from the particulate filter, there's a hanger bracket.
The two bolts in this had worked very-loose ... finger tight ... Hence the rattle.
I pinched them up.
The rattle stopped.

BUT

Given that the hanger bracket is fixed to the floor of the car and is not a rubber mount means that any movement of the engine on its mounts could strain the exhaust against this fixing point.
Is it wise to pinch these bolts up tight.
OR
Is a little bit of "give" at this point desirable ?
I could achieve this by tightening sufficient to remove the rattle, and then lock-nutting the fasteners.

Any thoughts welcome.

BUMP ... Anyone ?
Or - Am I just being too-nit-picking ?

You sure the bracket is not mounted to the gearbox? Sure it is on my w202 so any engine movement will also be on the gearbox so exhaust will move with it too then rubber mounts on the pipe to body allow it to move as it needs.

Hi S/H.
Thanks for this.
The bracket disappears up between the under-panels and you may very-well be right.
In fact ... I'll bet you are right.
I'll have another look.
Thanks again.

on my W124 it attaches near the gearbox mount.... mine snapped a few years back and i had to replace it

Hi John,
There is a flex joint/ clamp after the turbo. Then this should take the strain/ movements.
I am not sure about the rest, been so long I have not looked under a E300TD...

Thanks everyone for your help.
I'll have another look.
Cheers.
John

The mount is indeed mounted onto the gearbox, so do it up tight.

The filter you mention is actually the Cat.

Thanks DM.
It's tight now and all the rattle has gone.
Is it actually a true catalytic after-burner ?
I always thought it was an old-fashioned type of filter.
I remember the one on my old blue E300TD broke up inside and was rattling like a *******.
The guy who got me one referred to it as a filter.
