e63 AMG Blown Engine

Ouch!!, sorry to hear this.

I would have thought the 6.2 engine would be really robust though, 520 BHP from an engine that big is hardly straining it.
This seems an exception rather than the rule though, it's certainly no TVR Straight Six.

Just had a look at this guys "other items", in the above link, and hats off to him for providing this valuable repatriation service for all the stolen stripped prestige cars. :thumb:

Yeah, it would be interesting to find out the engine number!

he is also offering
Engine Mercedes SLS 63 6.3 6.2 AMG 571HP 420kW V8 Great condition for £17,000

Yea, his business has suddenly moved up a few gears into the Premiership of scrap men if you look at his feedback. A lot of very expensive engines in great condition suddenly available to scrap men.

It does seem odd the front of the bentley is ok, the side and the interior.
Maybe damage is on the corner not visable? ;)
Rhd too i see in Poland.

There are already threads on 55TT engines going bang to :(

I'd be lying if I said that didn't put me off!

Especially given how complicated the latest round of E63s are now.

Think I might stick with mine as long as I can and then call it a day - or switch manufacturers if I really have the urge for something fruity in future. Saying that - it wouldn't surprise me if other super saloon companies are having issues with their engines.

Is it cutting costs too far, p55 poor engineering or we are simply asking too much of engines now (600/700BHP used to be the preserve of F1 cars racing for a couple of hours and unheard of in road cars)?

Posh, fast cars get crashed all the time.

Here's a question about fitting a 2nd hand AMG 63 engine.

Which builders badge do you use, the new one or the original?

It matters....

replacement engine builder's badge since he/she built the engine

I think this plays a part.

I'm not questioning the engineering capabilities of manufacturers as such, but I do think they are under pressure (from one another, not just consumers) to create the most powerful monsters. This means really pushing an engines tolerances to their limits.

Was it modded by Any chance?

yes my 55k engine was modded, 180mm pulley, remap, kleeman headers, full cat delete,
root cause was a failure to upgrade the fuel rail, and as a consequence the 8th cylinder was starved of fuel at high speed, resulting in detonation of the right bank of the engine.

The fault was my own as i had not requested this upgrade part as i did not think the power levels justified it, it was however next on the list after an intercooler upgrade.
So more fool me.
On the other hand it could just have been one of those things..

Absolutley awesome car, still brings a tear to my eye when i think about it smoking in distress..

They aren't pushing things in real terms though, the MB/AMG way has always been 'stick a big engine in it'...

Based on advertised power figures the m156 engine is upto around 85 bhp/litre which isn't exactly highly tuned even for a production car... in the mid ninties BMW managed to get (near as damn it anyways) the 'magical' 100bhp/litre naturally asspirated with the M3  Pretty sure Honda have managed it with some/all of the type R models too (included incase someone mentions BMWs nikasil fubar and/or vanos issues :D) The 5.5L biturbo m157 manages 97bhp/litre going by wikipedias numbers but that doesn't count as it's turbocharged

Porsche's GT3 4.0 RS is 125hp per litre

Engines can go bang particularly high performance ones it is not unheard of standard or modified, just search Porsche, Toyota, Subaru, Nissan, BMW , Honda & Mercedes and the words blown engine some poor bugger somewhere in the world has been through it.

That's true. That was the E36 M3 Evolution which came out in early 1996 - 321BHP and 3201cc. The dual VANOS was somewhat less stable than single VANOS but mine only ever had a bulging gasket which was replaced under warranty, and mine got some stick... I see the car is still running today some 12 years on from when I owned it. Nikasil didn't affect M3s as it wasn't used in them.

I think the only other car at the time to produce 100BHP/litre with normal aspiration was the McLaren F1.
