Engine cutting out

Gents,
I have a E300 turbodeisel (R reg, 1998) and it has a strange fault. As the fuel gauge gets down to about a quarter full the car has a tendancy to suddenly cut out for no apparent reason. After about two minutes it starts O.K. but will cut out again unless the fuel level is raised. Once it is filled up it runs as perfectly as it did before. I have now taken to only letting it get to half empty as way of avoiding the problem.

Any ideas ???

Yes the fuel strainer in the tank is blocked. Do a search on Aandyy as had a similar problem.

Ian,

Many thanks for your tip.

Got a new strainer yesterday and replaced the old one.

Couldn't believe the ammount of crap the old strainer was clogged up with.

Will let the fuel run low now and see if this has cured the problem.

Thanks again,

Brendan

Why would a blocked fuel strainer cause a problem when the fuel level is low, but not when it is high? Wouldn't the resistance to flow be the same at all fuel levels?
