Engine Oil level question

Hi All, OK this may seem a dim question but bear with me.
I have a 2003 reg CLK55 AMG. I recently did the service on it myself with Merc original parts.
Merc gave me 8 litres of Castrol edge 0/40w oil. At the time, I didn't have the manual, so I started off by only adding 6l.
The car was/is happy with the level until it gets warm, then every time the oil reaches 90 or above, it complains it has too much oil.
I have removed around 5 litres already, and its still winging. It is being measured, via the dash, on flat & level ground.
I'm worried now that running this engine, with seemingly only a litre of oil in it, is lining me up for another expensive failure. (box recon just done)
I'm pretty certain that I got all of the old oil out via the extraction method because what came out was jet black, as a service was due, and the oil being removed since is still red and clean.
Are the sensors dodgy on these? Is it measured by some other form of german wizardry? Have I done something wrong?
Thanks in advance - Nicky:dk:

you might be right, there are two access tubes at the rear, one with a completely red top with a 'pull off' piece, the other , lower and slightly behind the first, with a black cap and red insert - have I just proved I am a wally?

You are indeed draining the gearbox oil . If I was you I'd replace it with exactly the amount you took out before running it again. And probably only need to drain half a litre of engine oil . If you put 6 litres in chances are that the problem is the oil that was left in the engine and pipe work has triggered the warning of to much oil.

yep - what a donut/doughnut
thanks for your help guys - my brain has evidently turned to cabbage! :fail

This should be posted on "will you put your hands up…" thread. Brilliant and good on you for coming clean.

I thought one couldn't use an oil extractor on AMG engines as they have a saddle type sump and two sump drain plugs? You would never remove all the old oil.

I hope you have had the gearbox fluid correctly topped up now???

Good for putting your hand up! We all do silly things, not many will admit it :)

AMG engines
