when i show the oil level on the cluster in my W208 1999 CLK it shows up as over the max level. will this be ok or should i drain some? i dont really want to drain any as (1) i dont know how (2) havnt got much spare time at the moment. the car was serviced about 1,000 miles ago when i purchased the car by a non-merc dealer.

will it damage the engine or will it be ok?

Mine was overfilled recently and some oil found its way onto the clutch plate causing loads of judder  I removed some of the oil easily though as I've got a gadget for sucking oil out through the dip stick hole. Eventually the cluth returned to normal.

I'm sure yours will be an auto box though.

That's my experience of to much oil anyway.

Difficult one. It depends on how much overfilled - if it is only a smidgin then do not worry but if significant you need to sort. Overfilling with oil causes a number of problems, aeration as the crank whips up the higher level into a froth which in turn could (just could) cause oil pressure problems. There is an issue of overpressurising crankshaft, camshaft seals. Finally oil could get drawn up through the breather system or in extremis up the bores to increase lubricatin oil being burned.

Best solution (assume you have a dipstick - I know later Mercs do not have them - seems daft to me) is to use a topsider device to draw some out. OR get underneath when engine cold and very very carefully let some out of the sump.

Good luck

If you have a dipstick I'd suggest that you check that - it may just be a dicky sensor reading. If you eyeball the level on the dipstick there is no arguing with that. If it really is a bit high then you'll be able to judge how much. If you need to drain some out I'd suggest you do it when cold as the flow will be slower and a bit more controllable.

go back to garage and ask them to drain oil seals will go if high level left and high oil level can as said above cause the maf to go faulty sensor covered in thin film of oil modern oils will not burn off as oil 10 yrs ago and petrols do not use /burn oil to the same amount drain and check very soon

I checked mine the other day and it came up the same, reduce oil level or something like that and I don't have a dipstick to see by how much. The car was only serviced a couple of weeks ago.

But... my drive is on a slight slope so I moved the car onto the level road, let it stand for an hour and checked it again and it said the level was ok.

Mine kept coming up with a warning to reduce oil level a couple of months. I had put a litre of oil in as the cluster display had told me and it then kept flashing up red as I was driving telling me to reduce the oil level.
Spoke to Merc's and they said it can be very slightly over and the message will appear so not to worry.
I have had it serviced since and it is ok now.

cant take it back to the garage as only noticed this feature was available the other day and bought the car a couple of months ago. garage was crap anyway so doubt they would do anything
