Replacement engine advice - please!

'recently bough a lovely '88 200E estate, my first MB, and am well pleased with it. It's ideal for the family & dogs

I can see me keeping it for a few years , the bodywork is faultless but recognise that the engine may need an overhaul sometime (only 110K at present time)

When that time comes wonder if I can trade up to a bigger engine as it is a little on the slow side.

Crewe Engines say they could do it at a price. Does anyone have any advice or good / bad experiences of engine swaps / upgrades & places to shop around?

thanks

Steve C.

There is a previous thread that mentions dealing with Crewe engines, so try a search for that.

Only thing that springs to mind other than mechanical issues is that you will have to insure it as a modified vehicle, not a standard one.

Thanks for that Graham,

'got a reply & quote from Crewe Engines late this afternoon:

A straight 200e four pot engine swap is £895

An upgrade to a 2.3 litre engine is an additional £150

For them to fit is an extra £245 all exc VAT.

hopefully I'll have a while to save up!!

Steve.

I wouldn't go for an engine swap unless you have a donor car.
You need to change the gear ratios as well by swapping the differential.

You would be better running the car then going for a more powerfull model when the time comes.

Just a thought, different gearing could affect the speedo readings
if the cable is connected to the transmission. If the speedo took it's signal from a front wheel there wouldn't be a problem.
