Hi all

Can anyone recommend the best product to use to clean exhaust tips

been covered countless times, do a search!

Thanks for that.

What's best to use to prep the chrome before using autosol

What's best to use to prep the chrome before using autosol

I'm sure there is a preferred/ recommended way to go about it but I used 2 grades of sandpaper to work off the bonded-on crap and to also remove pitting from the lower section of the tailpipe lips.

I sanded them down by hand. Took about an hour and a half per tailpipe. That's the only time I didn't like having 4 of them! Lol

Some people have used dremels or other equipment, but I like doing things the hard way.. Or didn't have the patience to wait until I got hold of appropriate equipment  :D

I then spent the following week or so going over the chrome with Autosol.

It's the first time I had done tailpipes but I have heard some people mention that the chrome on some tailpipes can be quite thin, so go easy I guess would be the advice.

I didn't have any problems and they came up beautifully.

Thanks for that Rashman. I will give this a go at the weekend

Yeah, give it a go and see how you get on.

Take your time about it.

Don't use sandpaper that is too rough.
Resist the urge to get the bonded-on crap off in 2 minutes!

Finer sandpaper will mean shallower scratches, which will be easier to work out with the polish.

It'll take longer but it's worth it.

Don't use sandpapaer! Use 000 wire wool and lubricate it with a polish but only if the polish on it's own won't cut through the dirt. Wire wool won't damage the chrome plating as much as sandpaper will.

Best polishes on the market right now (imo) are the Britemax products - Easy Cut and Final Shine. They are very very good.

I remember seeing a thread on here recommending a sink cleaner, that's serposed to work wonders on tail pipes. I can't remember the name of the thread:)

I used to use Autosol until I found an even better product: Belgom Alu. It's used by the bike community and is miles better than Autosol.
