F Type Disappointment

I like the F Type, but agree the boot space is disappointing, an area in which an R8 and 911 have it licked.

My one reason for owning a car like this would be to drive down to the south of France or the Italian Lakes and tour around, and the Jag fails miserably on that front.

It's a spots car, not a GT car. The XK is for long distance tours.

I know someone who currently has an XK 'vert and has an order in for an F...because he uses his cars for general driving, not long touring holidays...that's what cruise ships are for.

I don't get the O/p's comment regarding the interior of this car.

I don't get the attitude towards JLR in general.

As most people on here know, I'm a big fan of W211's but Mercedes went backwards with the next model with regards interior feel and quality. To me, it's natural successor is an XF.

Also, JLR released a 280bhp twin turbo diesel four year ago when Mercedes were still at 231 with their flagship diesel!

I'm actually looking to buy one when I sell the RRS...

I have had a 911 and you can pack for 2 people for a week, head over to Europe in search of the best roads on the continent. Same I an R8, 458, GTR, etc.

You can't do that in an F Type.

It only has two seats. ;)

Was that when they started using the Peugeot/Citroen 3.0 V6 HDi? ;)

I have had a proper look around and they are a nice place to sit.

I also think the XJ is gorgeous inside, but not being able to fit in one is a significant problem.

When I say the interior felt "cheap" I meant for a car that had an on the road price of over £90k, at the £58k price for the base car it's probably good. As I said after having a Caterham, it's great to go out for a drive on a Sunday morning but its another thing all together to use a sports car to go touring. I would have thought driving on some of Europe's best roads such as the Stelvio pass, would be a goal for every F Type driver.

The F Type is just not for me, which is a disappointment because when I changed out of my S2000 I really wanted to own one because its such a good looking car.

I saw an F Type yesterday being posed along the sea front, a black one.

I have to say I initially didn't know what it was, but what a beautifully styled car, and it made a gorgeous noise, even at 20 mph. It looked like £100k to me from the outside.....

and as I said a manual fore and aft adjustment on the seat.

All I can say is the drive is going to have to be good to worry Porsche, as I said I wouldn't buy one as I couldn't tour in it, but I'm sure there'll be plenty who will love it.

Manual seats in a sport car - I'm wondering whether you have your priorities in the correct order.

These cars tend to be personalised cars mainly for one person's use as opposed to a general car where additional drivers may use them and need to move seats frequently.

manual seats do not require as much weight dispensing with heavy electric motors - and therefore contribute to real world economy (every little counts)
and of course handling.

Have you considered a modern classic for European touring ?

My 1995 3.2 litre 124 coupe is fantastic for touring.

Powerful engine, stress free comfort, drop all the windows on the pillar-less coupe for loads of air, and open the large sun roof for more sun, and a massive boot for the wine - with 32 mpg.

Made for the job; AND you can get another two persons into the car if required, as it's a proper 4 seater for those special occasions.

I really don't get or like the F Type.

It's a strange car and I am not sure who they are targeting with it, a Boxster S is a better drive (according to reviews) and value, the 911 better all round in my opinion, R8 has it on looks alone.

I think the F Type is both too big and too expensive.

I think Jag should have been brave and gone for a £40k Boxster beater.

Will be interesting to see the sales numbers and the used values.

Everybody knows that the British and French collaborations are the best...

I actually think there is some merit in that. We are good at designing, they are good at automated manufacture and technology.

The size/shape of the boot is a function of its style. There seem to be more people giving positive comments on its style than negative comments on its boot.

I like the car and what JLR are trying to do with it. But I still feel it's too heavy and too expensive against the competition that I perceive it's up against. Oh, and there's no diesel option ;)

They have. It's the F-type, only that they're charging £60k for it. Clever boys. :)

I don't think Jag F Type drivers can afford to have their luggage sent ahead of them

Someone must produce this car.......the successor to the MX5

and there's no diesel option ;)

Have you driven a MX5, gets great reviews but the chassis needs to be stiffer..

At £60k I'm sure (presuming they own) all F type owners can afford to have luggage sent ahead if they desired but get your point, and if spending this kind of money you really can afford to run the petrol so no need for Diesel which slowly is becoming the more expensive option....

The boot is 200 litres. The Porsche 911 has 130, but what do they know about selling expensive cars? My Boxster was used for extensive foreign trips with two 130 litre boots fore and aft, you just pack light in squishy bags. I brought back six cases of wine plus luggage once. Practicality has never been the selling point of a real sports car from the year dot. My Morgan had room for a tiny sports bag. I still managed to disappear for a week in it.

Oh, and said Porsche cost over £50k 7 years ago - and mine was moderately specced. List price is meaningless unless you buy the base spec, and what that gives you.

We'll let the sales figure be the judge of that :-)

I am sure the Yanks will live it though.

All Jag coupes from XJ-S on have had bland interiors.XJ-S is so naff it's good.
No matter how sporting they claim they are always more GT
