Forged wheels

those wheels will look awesome on your 63, just dont kerb them or you will be suicidal...

Hahaha... Bloody right I will!

I am properly achey after spending all night cleaning them and waxing them. I went over them again this morning now that the wax has cured.

They really do look awesome.

.... Just the issue of making sure they fit now. The rears are my concern

Just waiting for the postman now, who should have my replacement bolts.
He better bloody have them, otherwise it will be Monday before I can get them on the car!

:thumb:

Are you going to run with the Mitchelin stickers on or off!? ;-)
Nice cleaning job, lets hope they keep clean!

Stickers?

Do you mean, the lettering on the tyres?

I am tempted to get the tyre pen out... but Alps will probably kill me :D

..... Very tempted though....

:D

Will the wheels stay clean? C'mon man... Do you know who you're talking to?! :D

Have to say though.. they are going to take ALOT longer to clean properly each time

Ah, you mean the stickers that are on the tread of the tyres!

I'll see how easily they come off.

Postman arrived.... no bolts :wallbash:

Spoke to James at Projex.
He forwarded me the email he sent to the supplier yesterday, in which he specifically requested a next day delivery.

Welcome to the UK :wallbash:

It's not James' fault and he was very apologetic.

So I guess it'll be Monday now :(

What I can say is that the wheels are very lovely lounge ornaments :rolleyes:

You could still trial fit them Rash, just don't drive anywhere!

Go on, you know you want to.. Get 'em on the car!!

Yes, true.

I don't like starting something I can't finish though :wallbash:

I've got loads of spare bolts... just the wrong type

These wheels take radius bolts, I only have a box full of cone bolts

Feeling abit p'd off with it now :(

Ill just wait until I get these poxy bolts on Monday.

I was trying to find somewhere near me that sells decent bolts.. I would blatantly go and buy some myself!

Can you not use the ones Projex sent you, just to mount the wheels and check clearances?

Yeah, I hear you bud.

I'd very much like to but I'm not happy screwing bolts into the rear hubs that I know are too long.

I'll just have to forget for another couple of days :(

The wait continues..... again! :wallbash:

Alloywheels direct will have the correct bolts.

Hey, Will :thumb:

Yeah, there's also WheelsUK who I normally use. He was more than happy to send me bolts but probably couldn't get them to me today - which is understandable.

I hate waiting for stuff, especially for something as trivial as this. This is why I consider every eventuality to prevent set backs like this. I did ask the guys at Projex to double check the bolt lengths by slotting one through a lug hole on one of the wheels to make sure they are definitely the right length.

He explained that it wasn't as simple as that and that he was sure he had the right ones.

But I'm not going to beat him up about it. Different Mercs use different length bolts, so it's an understandable mistake.

He's certainly going out of his way to send me new bolts, which is great and all I could ask of him :thumb:

I was going to see if there was a chance the bolts they sent with the wheels would work, but they're blatantly too long. I even ran the measurements past John at WheelsUK and he confirmed that they are way too long.

I'll just have to wait it out and hope these bolts arrive on Monday :(

Do all alloy wheels have the same thickness mounting boss i.e. the centre part that the bolts go through? I expect all MB alloys do as they would get soo much grief re bolt length otherwise. But 3rd party and especially forged wheels? Might your new ones need longer bolts to give the correct penetration into the hub?

Rash, what you going to do with your "old wheels"?

Hey bud,

The amount of "meat" in the centre pieces of wheels can vary to a certain degree.

Basically, the way I tend to gauge the length of bolts, is to see how much sticks out of the back of the wheel, which will indicate how much thread will screw into the hubs on the car.

I've always known that you should give yourself 6-7 turns on the bolt to ensure you get enough bolt into the hub.

You can probably get away with 8 or even 9 turns, but any more than that would be pushing it.

The bolts that came with the wheels indicate that 22mm of thread will be screwing into the hubs. That, in my opinion, is way too much.

I did a lot of experienting with my W208 which is where I learned what is too long and what is safe.

I was chatting to my friend who works as a technician at MB who came round to see the wheels. He said that MB do use different bolts for different models and he also advised I don't try using the bolts that came with my wheels because he felt they were too long too.

Hey Greg :thumb:

Not too sure yet bud.
I was initially thinking of selling them, but I still really like them. They are in perfect condition too with pretty much new tyres on too.

So I could use them as a spare set to give the car a different look from time to time :dk:

I have also told myself that my new wheels will NEVER see a salty road, even when I get the car out during winter on the odd occasion when I get the car warmed up and moving.

So I am going to be firm about it and take them off the car at the first sign of a gritter.

So, I may end up using my current wheels as spares to put on in the winter months.

Not too sure yet

I now have 3 sets of wheels :D

Really simple to remove the stickers from the rears, fit them to car start the engine turn off traction control. Then apply the brake with your left foot and then hit the accelerator with your right foot until the smoke turns blue.

Get some Winter tyres on your old wheels, you can use the car all year round then.

Just get Mr angry grinder out to the long bolts.
