Formula 1 2020 (Will Contain Race Day Spoilers)

Yes they had a new engine for virtually every session. Crash on lap one? No problem...run back to the pits and get in the spare car!

Well only 'no problem' if the race was stopped and restarted because of a pile up at the first corner. Then there was the possibility of fighting with your team mate for access to the T- car! And then the issue as to who it was set up for.

I just looked it up - and the T-car lasted till 2008 (My vague recollection - if asked was that they had disappeared around 1998/1999 - so much for my recall ability).

I would also observe that we see much cleaner starts these days.

Was it ever that simple.

What about James Hunt in 1975 when he was initially not allowed to restart the race after the first corner crash because he didn't complete the lap. The stewards did let him start eventually but only after the crowd started throwing things on to the track in protest. I was there, spectating at the first corner. Hunt won the race but was later disqualified after Ferrari protested. The irony was that it was the two Ferrari cars that caused the crash in the first place. Bad sportsmanship from Ferrari and and that's one thing that hasn't changed in 45 years.

Sad - but predictable.

Difficult to see how Ms Williams wouldn't be pushed aside as part of any deal.

I didn't really pay much attention to F1 when I was younger even though I was well aware of names like Stewart, Hill, Clarkson, Brabham, Lauda, and Hunt. It was the year that Alan Jones won the WDC with Williams that I started actually following it over a season - and Williams were very much the first team I was aware of as a team rather than just the colour of he car and the driver.

I always assumed 'Test'

But in the context of the race S-car for 'spare' would have made more sense.

Spare cars were always known as 'T' cars as predominantly it was the 'test' car which was pressed into service if the there was an issue with the proposed race car.
Race cars would normally have lower mileage parts to the spec. confirmed by the test car during testing and practice.
There were also 'Q' cars at races like Le Mans. Built with a 'sprint' spec engine which would have a life much shorter than a 24hr sec engine.
Far fetched? That's exactly why 'party mode' is being banned from this weekend as the use of high boost pressures and advanced timing considerably reduces the engine life.
Qualy spec cars are not new in F1. Back in the early eighties I remember seeing Piquet's Brabham pitting just prior to the end of qualifying at Monaco to 'adjust' the engine. A mechanic whisked away the engine cover whilst some spanners were rattled in the engine bay.
Seconds later, four burly members of the crew wrestled 'an' engine cover back on the car before the driver completed a out lap prior to the car being weighed at the end of the session.....
I also noted that the fire bottle was a plastic blow moulded replica which probably weighed about 5 ounces rather than the regulation 5kgs......o_O

So, does anyone think Andy Cowell will take over as team boss at Williams?

No doubt Ferrari will be after him for his services. Team Principal at Williams would be a fresh challenge for him and it could be the new direction he is looking for.

I agree, for sure Ferrari would/will be after him. I think getting them back to the front row will be like pushing an elephant up the stairs. Can't think that's the challenge Andy is looking for? TP at Williams looks like a good fit to me. Not sure how that fits in with his gardening leave period.

Made the decision I will not be watching the race live on Sunday.
First time I can remember since I've had a family that I wont bother with a race. (

After looking at the comparative domination for the current Mercedes to that of the previous Red Bull, Ferrari etc. I've now decided it is just too much of domination.

Had wrote all sorts of stats etc.....................DELETED.....

Looking forward to seeing my mates on Sunday.

The same cannot be said for the F1 race.

Who needs Strat 2? Certainly not Mercedes! Seems Red Bull who were pushing for the engine mode ban have come off worse. The Hondas in general seemed to suffer the worst. Well done to Sainz, epic lap from him. I was surprised to see Mercedes use the Medium compound in Q1 and not Q2, perhaps they wanted to remove any strategic advantage the others might gain if there is an early safety car etc. Let's hope none of the manufacturers had their engines set too high - Perez did say he expects a couple of engine's blowing up on Sunday.

The Monza qualifying games were not as bad as last year but it was still a very messy Q1. I'm Glad Mercedes went out early in Q3.

Blinding pole lap again from Lewis with VB very close behind.
Great to see how far Honda and Renault have progressed although Renault still appear to have reliability problems.
Superb laps from both Sainz and Perez keeping the Red Bull back on the third row.

Hamilton's pole lap was the fastest ever in F1 at 164.286mph, and done without a tow as was Bottas's.
Not too sure that comparisons mean too much these days unless they’re against similar spec cars on the same track.

I’ve always agreed that F1 should produce and showcase the best technical innovations and if it does, each year should provide faster cars, unless the regulations stifle that of course. Kimi’s 2018 lap in the hybrid powered Ferrari (163.785mph) shows how hard it is to make huge improvements at the top of the sport with a speed improvement of only 0.501mph in two years.

It’s still an impressive result for the three-pointed star though.

With heavy heart blah blah blah. Love to see how much she has walked away with.

I think you’re making light of it. I watched that interview and I thought it was very heartfelt indeed. She was very up front and openly eluded to her mistakes over the years. Williams have been an awesome team built up from nothing. I’m sure they sold with a heavy heart and must feel very strange to end their F1 journey. I wish them all well.
