Formula 1 2020 (Will Contain Race Day Spoilers)

Mick Schumacher will drive an Alfa at the Eifel GP. He was originally going to drive a Ferrari but they wanted to see how he would do in something quicker than his current F2 car.
Callum Illot is also doing FP1 for Haas

Interestingly, Toto was interviewed in Sochi and admitted that he was in talks with F1 about replacing Chase Carey. These stopped early on as Ferrari vetoed it and surprise surprise had no objections about a former Ferrari boss running F1.

Never expected that. That'll be twice Honda have pulled the plug in what, 10 years? Red Bull and Alpha Tauri probably didn't see that coming.

F1 need to have a rethink. It's too complex and too expensive.

Wow!!! Be interesting to see where Red Bull goes to given their public bashing of Renault. 🙄

I can't see Merc supplying them. The prancing horse is now a donkey. I bet Cyril is adding a few 0's to his quote as I type this.
Horner must be eating his breakfast very slowly this morning hoping not to choke after his previous comments surrounding Renault.

Renault may move Cyril away from Renault Power Units at Viry Chatillon as he heads up Alpine and other motorsport interests.

Ferrari and Mercedes already refused to supply Red Bull in the past and they both have enough customers. It's too late for another manufacturer to come along as it would take years to develop from scratch. Red Bull will have already have their 2022 (2021) car designed around the Honda PU.

I think Max will be trying to exercise a break clause and be talking to Toto seeing as Lewis hasn't signed yet :D. Joking aside, he will be looking to take Bottas' seat in 2022

they could talk to aston martin

Well, assuming Lewis breaks Schummi's record next year, Mercedes could then step away. Without direct support from Renault (French government), Alpine will probably fold as an engine supplier. So in 2022/3, Ferrari (the last man standing) will have to supply all of teams, but at least they'll win the championships. Some say F1 needs Ferrari. In my view Ferrari need F1 more.

Sadly, with the wider move towards EV powertrains, the relevance of F1 will continue to diminish. I would actually like to see F1 move towards an alternative to battery technologies, e.g. Hydrogen. This would open up a world of opportunities. Replicating the present vehicle fleet with battery based EVs is not the way forward for personal mobility on a global basis.

Now that Aston Martin will not be sponsoring them from next year and the fact that they have their own team, it won't happen. Besides, they would never be able to build it from scratch in a year

I know they current F1 cars are hybrids but I don't think they will go to full EV. What's the point when there is Formula E? I agree an alternative powered PU like hydrogen or something else will be used.

On a side note, I watched 'Race to Perfection' last night and hearing the cars 'scream' was awesome.

Formula E is really Micky Mouse though. They have much much less power, performance, downforce, grip pace... than F1. The whine they make is bloody awful too. Spurious contrivances to 'spice things up'. Dull dull dull. Nowhere near the spectacle of F1 and serves to illustrate just how limiting having to use batteries for motive energy is.

The real solution going forward must have much higher energy density than batteries, not just for F1 but for all vehicles. Reliance on a creaking electrical grid is unlikely to be successful in the long term for transport in general. F1 is perhaps the best development platform with some of the very best engineering minds in the world. Allowing/encouraging a focus on alternative technologies could yield significant benefits in my view.

F1 is a tiny bit more established than FE, they have a bit more money as well. That's the reason.
Hydrogen FC is crap except it might be useful as an interim technology for haulage, nothing more. This isn't really the thread to be pushing your anti-BEV agenda though.

I don't have an anti-BEV agenda as such. I are just an engineer.

At least in Scalextric / Formula E the cars carry near enough the same weight throughout the race, eliminating one variable on speed
