Forum blocked from work...

Nobody lies on their death bed thinking "I wish I'd spent more time at the office"

we installed a prduct at work called websense. it was supposed to allow monitoring and selective blocking of url's.

however it failed miserably because users could access any banned url from google . we had it removed & didnt pay the bill - £800 ish.

I think we're all on the same page here in as much as saying employees shouldn't necessarily be barred from accessing the internet (porn, dodgy materia and massive downloads excluded), as long as they are accomplishing all their tasks.

Zooman, you sound like a reasonable bloke :) I'm guessing when you sacked this girl who was useless the fact she spent all day on the web gave you an excuse as much as being the problem in itself? After all, for most businesses in this day and age the internet is virtually 'free', as in you're going to pay for your bandwidth anyway and a few people checking the odd forum once in a while isn't going to flood your connection.

Forget about what's gone before in this thread. My greatest concern about people using the computers at work is that the only people allowed access to computers at work are also in public areas. I don't begrudge anyone using the Internet my work but I do check my Internet logs and sometimes what I find is quite upsetting. About six months ago we had a new night porter and what I found on the computers the next day scared the living daylights on me. Put this away I phoned the police. I phoned him up at the same day and told him never to step foot in the building again, the ****nal then came round to the hotel to see what I had sacked him. Being very serious now he was a very lucky man that children and women were in the room when he walked in because if they hadn't been.

I am sure most people seem another scenario in most offices all the time the scenario where people abuse the privilege and that's what it is a privilege not a right. It only takes one extreme act like that I experienced and all of a sudden it becomes a very very serious issue within the workplace. To be honest I look in on the forum all the time at work.

Now to the girl, you were right she was sacked for being useless. and the fact that she held her job in contempt, this was displayed when she continued to use the intranet in my presence. My business is too small to carry people and as a result I just don't carry people and this girl was an example. She also served as a very good example to the remaining staff that I wasn't willing to accept tomfoolery on the computers when they should be working.

In our back room we have a 50 inch plasma screen telly and set up like most of these telly's to run as a computer screen (particularly good as we sell room for training purposes during the weekdays), now there are a few games on computers in our hotel and I have no issues with an connecting up the computer to the plasma screen to play games. Again as long as this is not on my company time and that's always my main concern is when the using my time for the own reasons. I don't know you had a look at that file I attached to the above post but basically it sure is my rules about using my computers.

Best way is to stick a 3G card in your laptop, then use that for surfing MBClub or whatever else you want to do. Using work's internet connection for personal stuff is very dodgy - at best they're probably monitoring where you go and how long you spend and at worst you're breaking your T&C's and might get fired!

But if you use your own kit, your own internet connection in your lunch break or when you've got slack time - then whos to know and whos to care?

Better to do that rather than to be dishonest and pretend to work when she hears you comming, surely. At least she was open about it.

 Careful! I guess you mean only if it's your laptop & not one provided by the company!

I run an IT Dept and support IT systems and recently installed a web content filtering device, guess which site was the highest visited in the first two weeks?

MBClub.co.uk :bannana: - Okay I was testing the system! We have a very strict policy, in fact at present most people with computer access don't even get internet access. Honestly though it's scary what some people try to access.

People shouldn't get paid for going to work - they should get paid for doing work.

Give them a weeks worth of tasks in a week and tell them to complete it by the end of the week. If they wanna stay late 'cos they ran a website or read mbclub then that's their choice - like all things within reason..

Im with you although that depends on the job they are doing. At times I could probably get away with doing 2 hrs a day work spend all day on the web and the come in on a Sat or work and hour later in the night. Or sometimes dont get a minute to breath. I have a job to do and do that job. If I use the web inbetween so what as long as the tasks are completed and my work is not affected.

I think MBClub is also one of my most visited sites, although most of the time I end up just reading posts, as I dont get the time to reply!

We have web monitoring and filtering on my Banks (yes Banks) internet connection, but MBClub is still allowed through.... so is EBAY!!

part of the internet policy for the bank is that we do not access or partake in forums, but part of my job looking after systems here I have to go on forums to find answers and ask questions!

I do agree to an extent with zooman and people do abuse the internet at work... I havent gone to the extreme of sacking anyone, but I have taken away Internet access rights to people who have been seen to take the P**s.

Well guys I'd like to point out that I am still at at home and not using the computer at work at work.

In fact I'm going to have a nice cup of coffee now and then I'm going to go to work.

We got one hell of a busy day ahead of us today. Around 250 in the restaurant throughout the day, on top of two private parties.

If this is a female PA, are you bringing her to a GTG ?

Not too sure about you asking Q no.1 there matey! ;)

Q No.2 - well if you can convince wifey to release me to go the the GTG two days before her EDD for child number 2 and convince my PA (23, blonde 5,8 and 9 to 9.5/10) to come along I it would definitely be a yes! (and an excuse for taking the PA wouldn't go amiss either)

:D

and yes female PA, just in case

isn't the world a crazy place ....I access my work from my home laptop and get told off for bugger all ......mind you seeing as there are only 5 others in the country who have the clearance to do our job we do what we bloody well please....but never take the p*ss we are too conscientious for that.....

And Fourthly I was only kidding in all but my last post.

Apologies for over-reacting Zooman I was having a particularly harrassing day and wasn't in the best of moods (too many people asking for too many things all of which had to be done instantly).

Just so I know, did the idea I suggested work?

It allowed me to read the posts but I couldn't log in to actually post anything, but better than nothing, cheers.
