I tried the G3 clay mitt a few months back on my rear bumper (obsidian black) and whilst it left the paint feeling like glass it left it looking almost orange peely. Tried SRP to get the marks off, then T Cut and finally had to resort to using the DA with a medium compound. I thought it maybe because the bumper was repainted before I took delivery of the car due to a scuff, and the paint wasn't fully hard. Tried the mitt again today on another body panel and it had the same affect. Used a quick detail spray as a lube. Any idea what is going on here?

No idea but I've used the clay mitt on my obsidian black paintwork using water and shampoo (Autoglym) to very good effect. Absolutely no marring just a glass smooth surface..

maybe my mitt needs 'breaking in'. I will try once more with water and shampoo and if the same thing happens it's going in the bin... Sob sob

Use it on your windows before using in the paint. And leave it soaking in hot soapy water.

I broke mine in on the windows using warm water and a really soapy car shampoo.
Then worked on the bodywork with the same shampoo mix.
Mine is Iridium Silver and came up like glass with no marking.
You got a paintwork problem perhaps?

how would I know? It's seems ok. Polishes up lovely. Weird thing is it marks easily suggesting it is really soft paint/clear coat but on the other hand is a pig to get the slightest scratch out with the DA polisher suggesting it is hard paint.
