The silver one.
On way home all normal slowed into 50 limit then slower for roundabout and as i picked up speed again i could hear a zizzing sound.

What the hells that? then next roundabout from a standing start judders then goes, plus loose tip functions, get home just go to back onto drive no go D or R whoops blocking the road and the footpath:o ign off start again R now works back onto drive phew.

No oil leaks gbox level checked about a month ago, i did post yesterday reference my worn engine mounts and was just reading howards/ollys old post with his gearbox probs due to worn mounts so does anyone reckon thats the cause of my problems? and if so what the zizzing noise not there all the time approx 20/30mph ish.

On way to mb yesterday to get price on mounts and felt the gearlever moving a lot more than usual, so seems like mounts.

Just thinking with the zizzing i wonder if the fan is touching anything:eek:

Yep just been outside zizzing noise if cooling fan rubbing offside, inside of cowling and also looks like whole powerplant has moved forward a couple of times and let the fan blades hit the front of the cowling and thats a good 25mm away:eek:
So good new is its not gearbox:bannana: bad news ive got to stump up for mb engine mounts, but on my other post he did recomend them so thats the way to go.

Glad i remembered the post from ages ago ref howards car.

So thats order new mounts then drive lisas car to work and i really hate that car, still at least it works:D

Will take some pics for a how to.

So the was the 'zizzing' sound the cooling fan or the water pump?

I was planning on writing a 'how to' for the water pump replacement on the M113. I would've waited and had it done somewhere, but it needed doing sooner rather than later so I had to replace it. The bearings were quite badly worn on the old one :o

I saved you some cash there!

Yes you have saved me a fortune as i would never had looked at the engine mounts so thats a big thanks from me:rock:.

Will, zizzing sound was the fan touching, due to mounts being knackered and not the water pump bearings.

Mounts ordered £155 + vat but will be 5% off due to discount card would have been more discount but as i need them tomorrow its the best he could do, and as i need the car this is my weekend driveway job cant wait! which also means its bound to rain.

New mounts fitted pretty easy.

Out for test drive soooo smooooth lovely:D then zizzing noise again crap crap damn and blast, ring recovery 10 mins later try car again and it drives ( cancel recovery) okay for a mile or so did this a couple of times and get home:)

So next job bring dipstick home and check gearbox oil if okay book into gearbox shop, at least nice man at breakdown service told me its also free to get car to workshop.

Top pic is old offside mount next to a new one, bottom pic is what is left of the nearside mount!

Out of interest what is the age and mileage of your W210?

Its a 2001 avantgarde model with 109k on the clock assuming this is genuine of course:)

crumbs wonder what the original mounts on my e300 diesel look like, now done 210k miles

See here Mercedes-Benz Owners' Forums

I dont know whether because it a v8 that gives them a hard time? but on the other hand it probably hasnt got the same low down torque that the diesel has, so swings and roundabouts.

That zizing noise is probably your gearbox gone south. Take the sump pan off and look for filings.

Olly i reckon you are right:(, checked level this morning engine cold midway between marks, took for short run zizziing started again after no more than 1 mile or so, just managed to get it home rechecked level tad low, topped up no more than 1/2 litre car wouldnt move, left 10 minutes and works again, then noise started again.

Looks like Monday i will be ringing auotmatix place on meday city estate.

Or alternatively just leave 2 hours early for work every day:D drive 1 mile allow to cool do anothr mile and so on.

Copy of answer to recomended gearbox repairer just in case someone else has the same problem.

Spoke to Terry at Meadspeed autos, what a man:rock: excellent advice told me what the problem was straight away, filter blocked due to suspected glycol contamination, breaking down the clutchs

So new filter and oil atf 3 and its now drives fine, another filter in the boot and some more oil atf 3 coming this afternoon so i can change it again later this week, if it runs okay for the next couple of weeks i will get a new rad and change the oil with mb oil this time.

Filters £7.50 each genuine mb cheaper than of e-bay!, atf 3 £17 for 5 litres and mb oil £60 for 12 litres from e bay:)

Then if its dies good and proper either get a second hand box or this one rebuilt.

So assuming it keeps it rolling thats less than £300 bargain.

Happy happy happy:bannana:

Meadspeed 07773 616545 hes now on holiday for the next week

Sorry to burst your bubble but they don't suffer with glycol contamination, its normally the 211's that do. Get glycol test done though to be sure.

Aaagh but i liked my bubble:D

Took some old oil to work and heated up a piece of tin and the oil just smoked no crackling or bubbling so assuming you are correct ie no water in the oil.

Still got to be worth a couple of oil changes then get some decent oil and another filter in place.

Lynall

Are you sure that the oil was a true representative sample of the whole oil from your gearbox?

I presume you'd have to warm up the gearbox before draining, drain the oil, then immediately take off the sample?

I couldnt warm it up as it wouldnt do more than 1 mile before ceasing forward motion:D.

Been okay to work and back, will change oil and filter again later this week then do same next week with merc oil and see, ive got an oil sample so may post it off, but my gut instinct says just fit a new rad for peace of mind.

Rads £150 plus p+p oil sample test approx £25 rad looks original 2001, so my thinking is it will need a rad some day so put the £25 towards a new radiator, dont forget in my case its only parts i have to pay for as my labour is foc.

Lynall

I'd be surprised if the rad was at fault (Glycol issue). Wasn't it only certain rads in W203s/W211s etc that were affected - don't recall hearing of it on W210s.

A 2001 car shouldn't need a radiator for quite some time, I suspect it would outlast your tenure with the car.

Might be better keeping the £150 for the rainy day gearbox overhaul fund?
