So I was having a look at Hellfrauds prices for batteries today and a mate suggested that you can get "up to 80%" discount with their trade card. Some things like e.g. motor oil you do not get discounted at all, but filters and other service parts look very cheap indeed.

Anybody got a trade card? How easy is it to obtain these? Are they just a gimmick? Is it better to go to a local motor factor?

PS Have battery prices gone up astronomically in he last couple of years? I can remember paying £25 for a small car battery, the cheapest I can find now is more than double that.

halfords own brand is total crap & they never have the part you need in a good brand best just avoid the place :)

Halfords are almost double the price for a battery. Go to a local Motor Factor and check the prices there...

I'd check the prices from Mercedes-Benz.

I bought a new battery for one of my cars there recently, about £50 or so (+vat) and was in stock. Comes with a 2-year warranty as well :)

Battery prices have probably risen due to the requirement for the provision of recycling facilities and waste management on behalf of the suppliers.

They probably rely on customers being a bit lazy too, by becoming the "default" choice. Car stuff = Halfords. Same as B&Q = DIY. The little guys on the high street and side roads we drive through to get to the 'sheds' are probably a far better option.

yes I have got a Halfords Trade Card,

yes it does score some superb discounts on stuff like batteries - last time we bought a battery we got 50% off with the trade card

Halfords batteries are as good as anybody elses' and most of them have got a five year warranty - if it fails, they give you a new one, no quibbles, no problems - try that with your local factor who changes suppliers every few months to keep his prices down.

How difficult it is to obtain a card depends on your local branch. The manager can give them out at his/her discretion if you are not actually "trade". Some of them ask for a letter head/business card both of which you can print up in a few minutes should you need to ;)

They are well worth having. Service parts like bulbs, wiper blades, filters etc suddenly become "pennies" (W124 front wiper blade £4, high output headlamp bulbs £7 a pair, sidelight/stop tail lamps about 15p each etc etc). You also get up to 30% off tools which makes their "pro" range stuff a real bargain.

If there's any doubt about strock, you can also order on-line at Halfords and make sure it's ready for you to collect when you want it. Our local one carries a huge range of batteries and gets other parts in to order within 24 hours if it's listed on their computer.

i also got a trade card, very easy to obtain, i just helped the guy who was trying to fit the wiper blades to a my friends car, i happened to pull in to park my car for the local shopping center, and saw him struggling to get the old blade off, i did it in under 30 seconds and he asked my friend if she wanted a refund and he would discount anything i purchased in store, but it was such a small, instead he sorted me out with a trade card! now i just pop in to get the odd bits and bobs and it puts a smile on my face!

Battery prices have risen due to the massive increase in Lead prices however most metal prices are now dropping back so this should be reflected in the price they also blame the increase on increased recycling facilities which is not true as lead is so valuable recyclers and smelters have been operating for over 80 years. On the Halfrauds trade card I also have one great for consumables, batteries, bulbs and pro range tools, Business card was alll that was needed to obtain it.

100% spot on.

Very interesting, one poster mentioned..... "I've got one of these cards through being a member of an online car club/forum."

I wonder if the Mods. could help us out here? :)

prices do tend to change as they give different discounts depending on what stock has cost them so no list will be definitive

As a rule, there is no discount on paints (I think the guys in that list have just taken off the VAT) but there is on sandpapers, and other "prep" materials.

Electrical items like switches and connectors score big discounts (presumably because they are so cheap to buy) and a few packs of tie straps cost us 10p each last month :)

While I have mixed feeling about halfords quality (some things feel horrible, others feel quite good indeed. I quite like their professional tool ranges) - their batteries is one thing I adore.

As I have a few cars, it means many times I don't use one for a while and forget to unplug the battery. This is turn leads my batteries to have very short lifespans, and I sufate (surfurise?) the batteries fairly quickly. I like to think of their batteries as a "rental". I pay £80 for 5-years worth of battery use, if I get any more - great!

The worst was the Audi, which is now in Italy... all replaced thanks to Halfords' warranty...

I may have to dust off my city and guilds mechanics certificate :D
