Help Needed with MY01 Firmware Upgrade

Had a look at the CD I used. CD-R Maxwell so nothing special. Looking back through the PO's bills the Comand CD was repaired about 3 years ago so the laser may have been replaced. Seems the PO was a smoker and the Comand had sucked in smoke and was covered in brown goo. Never leave you fags burning in the ashtray! You are welcome to try my CD but the "experts" experience is that you will need the Merc CD or a laser clean and polish. Good luck.

Cd-r

Thanks DickChailey - my CD-R is a Memorex, so probably similar quality to your one. I will try it with a proper MB CD, PJayUK has offered me his, I'll report back when I've tried it.

Some Progress - but more problems

I've made some progress, thanks largely to PJayUK who has very kindly provided me with an original MY01 upgrade disk. The unit now recognises the disk during the upgrade process and tells me the software versions - current, which is 1999 vintage, and on the upgrade disk which is late 2001. That's further than I've ever got before!

Now the bad news - when I take the next step and select 'head unit' the screen changes to a 'checking disk' display with a progress bar but after only a few seconds the screen goes completely blank and the unit seems to die completely. I can't power it back on, or worse eject the upgrade disk.

After half an hour or so things seem to reset themselves, in as much as I'm able to power the unit up and eject the disk. I've repeated the process twice and exactly the same things happened. The last time I tried it was Xmas eve and I just left the update disk in the unit and locked the car - went back today and found I now have a completely flat battery!

I've cleaned the CD drive using a 'home' CD/DVD cleaning disk, and I really don't think that it's the CD drive at fault. Has anyone any other suggestions as to what may be causing it to shutdown like this during the 'checking disk' stage?

...go and see Alfie!

Some of the early units wont update - they do exactly as you describe above - i've only seen it on W210 units, not CLK units, but then i've seen a lot more W210 units than CLK units.

The unit effectively crashes, and keeps using power - as you have found out.

I have never found a solution to this ..

Phil

I never got anywhere with the update, and from what I understand including talking to a very knowledgeable indi it doesn't offer much anyway...

Sorry mate I know you been pulling your hair out with this, I hope you get it sorted.

So close .... now need to disable ICAN

Thanks Paul and Richard - and you are spot on, I'm fast running out of hair (not that I started with a lot)!

Seriously though I think that I'm almost there, I think what's happening now is that the unit is going into an endless ICAN loop as described in this previous post that I've unearthed:

"6 For download with ICAN activity (if ICAN active, download
stops endlessly in the case of checking CD) press keys 1 and 3
at the same time (before start of download!)"

Problem is that pressing the 1 and 3 as described does not seem to work, the post actually referred to a W220 not a W208, so I wonder if I'm not doing it properly somehow. Does anyone out there know how to stop ICAN activity on a W208 Comand unit?

Any Suggestions anyone?

Does anyone out there have any more ideas or suggestions about how I can get around the Comand unit in my W208 shutting down (and going into some sort of loop) at the 'Checking disk' stage of upgrading the comand firmware to MY01?

Very frustrating if I have to give up at this stage having come so far and overcome all the initial problems with it not wanting to recognise an upgrade disk (even the stealers one) unless it is an original Merc/Bosch firmware CD. (Interestingly the head unit will happily play music CD-R's, but won't recognise a firmware ugrade on CD-R.)

Bringing this thread back from the dead. Im having the same problem as the OP. Any suggestions as to what I should do? Or does anyone know the part number for the CD?

Thanks

a) Clean the CD read head - I'd take it apart to do that, but the easier alternative is to get one of those CD cleaning disks with little brushes and special liquid. Use very very little liquid and run a few times (rather than a big blob and run once)

b) Use an original update CD and not a copy.

Part number is W230 589 00 22 00

Thanks Richard,

On a previous unit Ive cleaned the lens with just a cotton bud before, is this OK or do I need to use a solution?

And is the w230 part number the correct one for a 2000 w210 with COMAND 2.0?

Thanks again

Well it seems good at getting the dirt off (and real black dirt does seem to get onto the laser lens)

I then clean it with the dry end of the cotton bud stick or lint free cloth (depending on the state of de-construction). There will always be dust in there so not so worried about the cotton bud leaving minute fibres

Hope You Have Better Luck

Hi Aka$h - Afraid I had to give up in the end, even with the genuine CD and help from a techy expert at the local MB dealer I made no further progress. I eventually got fed up of it draining my battery and decided that my unit must be one of that batch that just won't update whatever you do.

Perhaps someone else has found a solution since my last post. out of interest what year and model is your car with this problem?

The car is a 2000/W E320 CDI, so one of the early batch I guess.

Im not 100% sure on this but im sure there is a way to update the unit via winstar, Ill need to look into this option. But Ill have a go at cleaning the lens as suggested by Richard.

Just noticed V11 for my w203 on Richards website:)
