I have not bought a camera just yet, but wondered if the power socket inside the boot space works via the ignition switch, as I don't want to use the front one which requires leaving the cover open, plus no where to hide the wire. The other possible option is the usb inside the arm rest as the wire can be concealed and lids shut. My question is? is the usb powered only when the ignition is on and will it power the camera instead or using a cig lighter type socket.
Thanks Guys!:dk:

I fitted a fag lighter socket inside the lower dash trim and fed it with a tap from the front socket.
Ran the wire up the a pillar and under the head lining and it is all invisible.

Hi, me being a dumb ****, how did you tap into the power socket?
Ta Eddie

I used (whisper it) scotchloks.
Hated and berated by many, but in the interior of a car, I can't recall ever having a problem.

I popped out the interior light cluster and cut into the 12v wire. Then just ran a small stripped wire around the cig lighter power plug for my dash-cam and another for the earth. All the excess tucks up in the headlining and just 4 inches or so are left to run to my camera mounted below the rear view mirror.

It's permanent live, but that suits me, I can turn the camera off if I wish, but I park on my drive at home facing my shed, we have had a few break-ins in the area so I effectively get CCTV on my shed.

:-)

Do you have a 12v socket in the glove box? I wired my camera to that socket but mine is a W204. The socket also works on/off with the ignition and is very easy to run the wire too.

Hi Thanks for the info, however the w205 on has a socket in the dash cubby hole which is no good for hiding the wires, plus its too shallow so it cant be shut with the plug in. No socket in the glove box which is a shame, the other socket is in the boot space which might be ok if I can get a long enough lead.

Still not decided which camera to get either as there are so many to choose from.

Have a Google for techmoan, he's got a good few right ups and videos regarding dashcams, I've got 2 möbius action cams (extremely discreet) in the wife's Tiguan and 1 in the front of mine because I can't fathom out where to put a rear camera in a cabriolet.
